I gotta admit when I was watching The Golf Channel last night and they were interviewing all of the players about Tiger’s impending return next week – I actually felt for the first time that most of the players did not actually resent him. To a man, everyone was spouting some derivative of the following few statements…
” The guy that drives the Tour….”
” The Tour Needs Tiger…”
” We need him out here…”
Ryder Cup hero Kenny Perry went as far to say that ” Every time I see Tiger out here I ask him if I can carry his bag from the car to the club house…He’s just done so much for our Tour…”
Why would all of the best players in the World want a guy out there who pounds them into the ground every chance he gets? Money. The players know that when their biggest drawing card was out that attendance sagged, television ratings sagged, and interest in the game itself sagged. In these tough economic times, even the millionaires are feeling the pinch (or at least a prick).
So we know we can expect to see Tiger next week…but lets look beyond Match Play to get a feel for the rest of his schedule here in the US. Based on his previous years and playing schedule, we will see Tiger about 16 times between now and the playoffs….
- 3/12-15 – WGC CA Championships @ Doral
- 3/26-29 – Arnold Palmer Classic @ Bay Hill
- 4/9-12 – The Masters @ Augusta National
- 4/23 – 29 – Wachovia Championship @ Charlotte NC
- 5/7-10 – The Players Championship @ TPC Sawgrass
- 6/4-7 – The Memorial @ Murifield Village
- 6/18-21 – US Open @ Bethpage Black
- 7/2-7/5 – AT&T National @ Congressional
- 7/16-19 – British Open @ Turnberry
- 7/30-8/2 – Buick Open @ Grand Blanc, MI
- 8/6-9 – WGC Bridgestone Invitational @ Firestone
- 8/13-16 – PGA Championship @ Hazeltine
As far as the playoffs are concerned…I am just not too sure about the new format to say for sure that he will play all four. I say he skips Barclays though. Tiger rarely plays three straight weeks.
- 9/4-7 – Deutsche Bank @ TPC Boston
- 9/10-13 – BMW @ Cog Hill
- 9/24-27 - The Tour Championship @ East Lake
Of these tournaments listed here I am resonably sure (like 99%) that he has won each of them except for the AT&T National…which he has only played in once. The only reason I clarify that with the 1% eror, is that there are so many Buick Opens (Thanks Taxpayers) that I am not positive he has won the one in Michigan without doing some research. I would rather you call me out on the error.
As far as the Majors go and the pursuit of the Grand Slam…Tiger has won at Augusta obviously, and he won the only US Open @ Bethpage Black. As far as Turnberry for the British Open…it hasnt hosted the Open since 1994 and Tiger did not play. Hazeltine hosted the PGA in 2002 where he finished second to Rich Beem (who hasn’t done anything since). Other than Turnberry…we have pretty solid evidence that this could very well be the year that TW wins the Grand Slam. Although golf is fickle, I wouldn’t be suprised personally to see Tiger win 10 of his 16 starts…golf just isnt that easy – but Tiger Woods is just that good.

i gotta admit, i havent watched golf on television this year other than a few holes at kapalua…and i am a pretty avid fan…i will however be watching this weekend…why? TW…if hes not playing i could care less…and if i am an avid fan – how many other avid fans do the same?>
(Quote)
I am actually looking forward to see him playing in Boston on labor day weekend.
(Quote)
you gonna actually go…i see him every year or two out here at sherwood for his world challenge
(Quote)
I should be able to catch him for a day or two at Hazeltine. That should be pretty cool.
I have trouble watching golf on NBC. Not big on their announcing team.
(Quote)
yeah johnny miller can …well, i gotta censor myself durin business hours
/boss says so
(Quote)
Drive you nucking futs?
(Quote)

Amar’e Stoudemire could miss the entire season due to an eye injury suffered Wednesday against the clippers…requires surgery for a detached retina. (ESPN)

(Quote)
I can’t stand Miller either.
CBS Golf > ABC/ESPN Golf > NBC Golf
(Quote)
Masters is quality golf announcing all the way around
(Quote)
Tiger is back, so people comment in the PGA post. amazing….
(Quote)
well one was a thread jack…and seven by me…so its not all that impressive…haha
(Quote)
Meeting time. Back later
(Quote)
nice excuse to get out of the thread, hawkeye.
(Quote)
Wait…are you telling me the PGA Tour started before this weekend? I don’t believe you.
(Quote)
Now… we accuse him of being on steroids!
(Quote)
re: thread jack – is it just me or are there alot more injuries in the NBA this year? did they start PED testing or something?
(Quote)
never heard of a retina being linked to PEDs
(Quote)
the pga tour season doesn’t officially start in my opinion until tiger tees it up
(Quote)
mikey- that goes for everyone.
(Quote)
you crazy threadjackers
(Quote)
Mikey- you think he takes the Green Jacket?
(Quote)
Sorry for the threadjack, but figured it’d get lost if it wasn’t in t he latest post…as far as TW goes, I’m not a big golf guy but maybe I’ll tune in just to see how he looks.

I actually got to watch Tiger and Vijay at the DeutscheBank one year.
All I kept thinking was “combined, these guys make $100M a year. I need to fix my slice…”

John Smoltz was talking on my radio this morning. He said he has played 20-30 times with Tiger and has almost beat him once (lost by a stroke). Smoltz was absolutely convinced he will beat Tiger at some point.
(Quote)
john- you think Tiger was playing him with the same focus as he does on the final 18 at Augusta? Smoltz is dreaming.
(Quote)
tiger gets another green jacket this year
(Quote)
Smoltzie is a pretty good golfer… but I guess when you only have to work once every five days…
// < - former pitcher...
(Quote)
Probably not, but I don’t think Tiger would take it easy on Smoltz either.
(Quote)
imo opinion, tiger has no reason to lie…
i think that winning the us open for him on a bad wheel is gonna be akin to lance armstrong beating cancer and racing bikes
i know that the two are wildly disproportionate but what i am trying to say is lance said it was easy to climb hills on a bike after chemo…i think tiger will think its easy to win on two good legs instead of one one good one and one with a torn ligament
(Quote)
Where’s the Open and PGA next year
The US Open is at Pebble right?
I haven’t really watched golf since Tiger got hurt. It just hasn’t been the same level of excitment as before. I know the other guys are good but there’s something missing when Tiger isn’t in the field. I think he spoiled us to be honest with all of his amazing shots through the years
(Quote)
watched golf more when i was still playing, been a few years since i got my clubs out.

PGA: Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn
Open: Turnberry
(Quote)
No trey I meant in 2009
I don’t like the unknown course in there for a grand slam purprose, but i think if the other two courses match up to his liking when the US Open is at Pebble he could do it
(Quote)
johnny in 10 u mean?
majors in 2010
augusta. pebble, st.andrews, whistling straights
(Quote)
How’d he do in Whistling Straights because he’s going to win Pebble and St Andrews next year. He always has a chance at the Masters
Screw it. I’m going to say that he wins the grand slam next year
(Quote)
i got him ding it this year…and then again next year
/dillusuion’d
(Quote)
woods finished t24 a whistling straights in 2005…six behind singh
(Quote)
I’d go along with that. I just don’t like Turnberry in there. I think he wins two this year. The US Open and either the Masters or PGA
(Quote)
really? i got smoltz winning the grand slam next year
(Quote)
Only one guy can beat Tigger
(Quote)
I’ve correctly picked the last 11 grand slam winners
(Quote)
Was 2005 one of the years he was doing a swing change or no. It’s hard to believe that he’s been around for as long as he has
(Quote)
15 years already…i know
(Quote)
nah..in 05 he won 7x …including masters and british
(Quote)
The years blend together with him for me now
God it’s going to be good to have him back
(Quote)
i remember thinking it was crazy he was changing his swing, because he was already winning everything
next time he needs a challenge like that, i think he should switch to lefty
(Quote)
the thing that blows my mind is that it is his 12th full year on tour now.
(Quote)
I know Sparty. That’s just hard to believe. I was 13 when he came to the tour then and that just doesn’t make sense to me
(Quote)
13?!?!?
(Quote)
Yeah I’m only 25 now and my first job after 5 and a half years of school (masters rather than a long undergrad career)
