We are having a lot of fun with the nostalgia of the old WWF posts we have had the last few days. We have also received several emails thanking us for them, and suggestions for future posts. Today, we thought we would look at some of the more memorable heel turns in the wrestling history.
What the hell is a heel? In professional wrestling, a heel is a villain character (Wikipedia)
So what is the opposite of a heel? In professional wrestling, a face or babyface is a character who is portrayed as heroic relative to the heel wrestlers. (Wikipedia)
So basically the “heel turn” is when a good guy becomes a bad guy. Now, we are not looking at it to see if it was a smart or successful move to do so within the storyline, but most of these were shocking to say the least.
We saw this one yesterday, Shawn Michaels turns on Marty Jannetty and breaks up one of the most popular tag teams of all-time. Strangely enough, these two had dissension in real-life, and Vince McMahon used it to fuel a story line.
Steve Austin sides with Vince McMahon. One of the main storyline’s of the WWF’s Attitude Era was the one with Stone Cold Steve Austin always fighting with Vince McMahon. However, that had become somewhat stale by Wrestlemania 17. In his championship match with the Rock, he hit him with a chair, which wasn’t really out of character for him) but then celebrated his victory by drinking a beer with Vince McMahon.
You will have to click here to see his first promo as a bad guy.
Bret “Hitman” Hart turns his back on American fans. This is an interesting one. Wrestling has always been just as big in Canada as it is in the US. Canadian fans love their wrestlers, and always cheer for them if they are face or heel. They would boo an American face if he was up against any Canadian wrestler. Vince McMahon decided to play off this with Bret Hart, and have him turn on that fans in the states. Here is part 1:
and here is part 2:
Shawn Michaels superkicks Hulk Hogan. Hulk Hogan was as over with the fans as he had ever beenn, Michaels wanted to put on a match with him, but someone had to lose. Shawn thought it would be best if he played the bad guy just for this feud, and what better way to get the fans to turn on you than kick the biggest fan favorite ever.
Andre the Giant turns on Hogan.Andre was a fan favorite for years, mostly because of his size. The storyline was that Andre was jealous that Hogan was getting all the recognition, and that he was the champ, even though nobody had ever pinned Andre in 15 years. One night Andre showed up and told his buddy Hogan that they were no more and he wanted a shot at the belt. Hogan would win the match of Andre and it would immortalize him in wrestling lore.
The Mega-Powers break up. Another guy turns on Hogan. This time it is Randy “Macho Man” Savage. Basic storyline is that he didn’t trust Hogan with Miss Elizabeth.
Jim Ross joins fake Diesel and fake Razor Ramon. He was bitter towards Vince McMahon for firing him, and he decides to make a mockery of the WWF.
The Rock was insanely popular. He became so popular that Hollywood came calling, much like they did for Hulk Hogan back in the 80s. He started to take several hiatuses from the WWE, and the fans started to turn on him for his lack of performances. When his name would be mentioned, fans would boo. So when he finally returned, they had him turn against the fans, telling him they didn’t respect what he had given them for so many years. This also allowed him to feud with his buddy Goldberg. There is no video online of him turning heel, but this was during that run.
I am not even going to both getting into Chris Jericho, HHH, and Ric Flair. Those guys turn once year.
Finally, the greatest heel turn ever. The WCW had recently launched their own Monday Night wrestling program and needed a way to get fans to watch. At the Bash at the Beach PPV event, Hogan looks like he is making a triumphant return to help the good guys like he had done so many times before. Then he would shock everyone and wrestling would never be the same.

This list pretty much covers all of my favorites.
I remember being pretty shocked at Survivor Series 98 I think, where Shane McMahon turned heel. He was getting ready to count a pin for Austin and then after 2 flipped him the bird.
That was the same night there was a double turn with Mankind and Rock, where Rock became the Corporate Champ.

My favorite heel turn was Roger Clemens

shhh, knightro, don’t tease future posts!

The Rock could come back to WWE tomorrow (as opposed to making crappy kids’ movies… guh) and he would instantly be the most popular wrestler on the roster. Still the best man on a microphone in the past fifteen years.

Another reason why WWF/E sucks today, is because guys turn heel/face or vice-versa at least once a year.
(Quote)
the Rock was so overrated on the mic. Nobody touches Piper.
(Quote)
John, they are producing far more original programming now than they were then, comes with the territory.
(Quote)
remember when you had to watch a ppv, saturday nights main event or a house show to see Hogan? it made the storylines take up an entire year. Hogan and Andre were still feuding a year after the WM match.

Piper was good, HBK & HHH are still funny because they ad-lib so much, but The Rock’s mic skills are second to none. I have friends who will repeatedly quote random Rock moments from ten years ago. Can’t do that with Piper or the others.
Yes, some of my friends are losers. Yes, so am I since I actually know the quotes too.

Sparty did you see Piper on RAW this past Monday? Amazing promo on Jericho.

You want to freshen things up in wrestling? have John Cena turn heel.
(Quote)
I’m still surprised WWE hasn’t suspended Jericho for knocking that woman out in the parking lot… you can’t tell me that was for some type of promo – he just lost his shit for a second.

Cena would be a good heel, but supposedly he’s told McMahon that the day Vince turns him heel is the day he walks away… Don’t know how much I believe that, but considering how many fans have already turned on him as a face and he still won’t turn, I guess it kind of makes sense
(Quote)
I don’t remember Piper that well, but the Rock definitely had more memorable one liners.
(Quote)
As long as Cena keeps selling merchandise like he is they won’t turn him.
I would be for it though, he was much better as a heel.
(Quote)
Big D-that’s just the thing, everything the Rock did was a catch phrase. you always knew when he was going to say “it doesn’t matter!”
Piper was original in each interview or promo he did, and never seemed forced. and like the promo he did this past week, you could tell that he loved the industry.

*cough*roid rage*cough*

Cena is an idiot then. Look at the Hogan turn. it was the best thing to happen in wrestling since Hogan slammed Andre.
(Quote)
Hot Rod was the best on the mic. It wasn’t scripted…no catch phrases and he insulted people as if he had extensive knowledge of them personally. Didn’t seem so scripted…like the banter between miz and trey. Plus you never knew if he was going to say something or drop the mic and pound someone for no good reason.
(Quote)
I have no doubt Cena would do as he was told. He is constantly calling The Rock out for leaving the business.
When Cena becomes stale enough he will turn. It is all about making money. Hogan knew he had become stale and had to turn to stay relevant.

knightro-or hit them with a coconut…

Way to kill the thread while I walk to lunch Mikey…
See Sparty, as a communications guy that’s exactly why I loved The Rock’s mic skills. It’s nice as an audience to know what coming ahead of time sometimes. Not all of the time – that’s when it gets stale and it becomes time for The Corporate Champion or whatever – but it’s nice to see it coming and still get a laugh out of it.
That’s why Cena’s routine is starting to get stale – everytime he fights the announcers have to use the “This is vintage Cena!” line as a nice way of saying “We know he’s using exactly the same maneuvers in exactly the same combination as he’s done for the past five years… but you’re still watching and cheering, so we’re not going to change it up.”

I wonder if Vince McMahon is behind the A-Rod story. I mean this thing seems like a WWE story line. Player being counted on to steal the HR record from the Bad Guy and in the end it turns out that he is not only as dirty as the guy with HR Record but may actually be worse.
(Quote)
so you need to resort to gimmicks to keep a guy fresh, except for Piper who was the shit all the time.
