The Morning After: Feburary 19, 2009

By GatorTrey

tmalogoThe NBA trade deadline is today and with Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, and Marcus Camby all rumored to potentially be moved. The NBA always gives you one big deal, who will it be?

Here is the thing about these huge trades teams take a shot at making. They rarely work out and end up screwing you in the end. Why? Because the NBA has a salary cap. Unlike baseball you don’t have to look ahead 2-3 years to see if you’ll have money to spend on a decent player. Honestly, without the salary cap, you’d probably have teams all over Vince Carter. But no one wants the HUGE contract he comes with, especially with the 2010 free agent class.

You could refer to the Rasheed Wallace trade in 2004 as the last deadline deal that did anything for a team. (I’m not going to call the GIFT that the Lakers got from Memphis last year a trade…) Last year the Cavs traded for a couple monster contracts in Ben Wallace and Wally Szczerbiak. Nothing. Jason Kidd to the Mavs? Screwed their future. The gem the Sixers pulled in 2005 to get Chris Webber? It took them a few years to recover!

The Bulls pulled the trigger on a tradethat would have been awesome like…5 years ago and gives them another ball hog who can’t play defense… Yay Bulls!

I’m beginning to believe that it’s news when Tracy McGrady IS healthy…oh…Greg Oden too.

Your NBA Scores.

I know we’re sick of A-Rod by now, but think of this as a Johnny Damon story. Now I like Johnny Damon, he’s an Orlando boy, and went to the same high school my wife went to. That being said he spewed this gem: “A-Rod could have done worse, he could have murdered someone.” Ya…Thanks for putting this into perspective Johnny, I guess he could have done worse.

The Sawx want a salary cap…a salary cap is so unAmerican,  just like the Sawx.

If things hadn’t gotten worse for the Washington Nationals, their prized 19 year old prospect Esmailyn Gonzalez who’d been tearing up the minors is actually a 23 year old named Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo.

Remember when the Pro Bowl was in Hawai’i? I can’t see how the players wouldn’t enjoy a free trip to Glendale, Arizona…

Tennessee Titan star Albert Haynesworthis testing the market…Upon hearing this the Tampa Bay Bucs said: “That’s Albert Haynesworth? I didn’t recognize him without his cleats in someone’s face.”

What do Indiana University and Oklahoma University have in common? If you guess recent basketball violations from Kelvin Sampson, you’re right. But that isn’t what I was looking for.

Did you see the doozy in Champagnelast night? I think a team of Sparty, Miz, Mikey, myself and Kobe Bryant could have scored more…Butler dropped another…The remainder of your college ball and hoop scores.

Who wants hockey news? Alex Ovechkin is awesome and apparently likes boozing before autograph sessions…And who is Mike Fisher? If you answered Carrie Underwood’s boyfriend OR a thug, you get a point.

Futbol star Kaka tells the LA Galaxy to let Beckham go to Italy permanently…LA laughs and says “you name is Kaka…that’s Spanish for poop.”

In the sad news department, I announce the passing of the Treo after an accident. I’m back to my old Motorola. Think my typing on a nice keypad that the Treo offered was terrible? Imagine a phone with the 9 button keypad. HAHAHA.
