NBA Studs & Duds 2/18

By guyinthecorner

sad-logoWhat happened in the NBA last night? A few things. The Magic beat the Bobcats behind Stud of the Day Dwight Howard’s monster game where he clearly proved anybody wrong who thought that the ‘Gic should have drafted Emeka Okafor. No player has ever recorded the stats he did last night (45/19/8). I say recorded because it definitely happened before 1972 when they started counting blocks. The Wiz beat the Wolves in what might have been Antawn Jamison’s last game in DC. If he’s gone in a trade tomorrow, I’ll miss him. He was a great guy and has an incredible range of talents. The Bucks went into Detroit and beat the Pistons after a bad game by Dud Rodney Stuckey. The Knicks beat the Spurs in OT after Nate Robinson took over the short period. Stud Kevin Durant had a career high 47 points including a fall away three near the end of the game to tie it up until CP3 waved off his coach (who he and his whole team hates) and charged up the floor with no timeout. He scored to win it. Those teams also made a trade yesterday: Tyson Chandler for Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith, and Devon Hardin. The Rockets beat the Nets but T-Mac is out for the year. The Suns, led by Stud Leandro Barbosa, beat the Clips by 40 points. In that game, Zach Randolph punched Louis Amundson in the face after Amudson got up in his face after Randolph and knocked him to the floor while getting position for a rebound on a made shot. Randolph was ejected and recently responded that Amundson got up so close to him that he though he was trying to kiss him and that he didn’t punch him, he pushed him, and that we should know that because if it had been a punch, Amundson wouldn’t have gotten up. Right. There are a ton of trade rumors flying around and they can be addressed in the comments. The rest of the lists and the top 10 plays are after the jump.

I would’ve though Krypto-Nate would’ve made the Studs…even if he did have extra minutes for stats.  (Quote)

wow…did you not watch the lakers or check the stats…pau gasol triple double (jason kidd style…but still) and lamar odom 15 points and 20 boards?  (Quote)

Must all news about Nate Robinson include the word “short”?  (Quote)

  • Big D says:

Good point Trio – Pau puts up a 3/2 and gets no Stud love?

More importantly, Kobe is a non-factor and doesn’t see the Dud side? Might be the only chance to put him there, unless he gets arrested this season  (Quote)

You guys should know by now that a triple-double actually is a bad thing in GITC’s wacky formula.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

we need this formula presented to us at some point. because right now it is like arguing hollinger stats versus traditional stats.  (Quote)

  • cbh49er says:

If anyone needed last night to completely prove to them that Dwight should have been drafted instead of Emeka they were a moron.  (Quote)

  • GatorTrey says:

Not gonna lie…I was all of Emeka. I was too caught up in the Kwame factor  (Quote)

  • cbh49er says:

I can understand thinking that when the draft took place but to be thinking that as of yesterday would have been absurd.  (Quote)

  • mikeychx says:

remember the original charlotte team…they were good fast…but i guess larry johnson, alonzo mourning, and anthony mason will do that for ya…  (Quote)

Really trey? I was ecstatic that the Magic picked Howard over Okefor. Never believed in Okefor’s talent in the NBA.  (Quote)

I would love to know gitc’s process for these S&D’s…and revealing the formula would be key to helping understand why Pierce is constantly omitted. Open up GITC’s School of Fuzzy Logic please!!  (Quote)

  • cbh49er says:

Dang, Nick Young was garbage last night.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

Anthony Mason? He wasn’t with that team for years. In fact, he went over there when the Knicks got LJ.  (Quote)

actually – yeah, i was thinking the “resurgence” under vlade divac from the kobe trade when they had mason  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

I never understand the criticism. I mean, I had Lamar Odom in 6th and McDyess was 5th. Compare their stats. Would you say Odom was better? People always complain about who wasn’t a Stud but they never take into account who they’d have to take off the list. This also happens with All Star teams. That’s why I always say who my All Stars are. Should Ray Allen have been an All Star? No. From afar it looks like he should but when you try to construct a team you can’t put him over other guys.

  • sparty says:

That sucks. He was part of The Crunch Bunch. LT, Van Pelt, Harry Carson, and Brian Kelley. He was always came back for games that they brought old players out at.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

gitc- the criticism would end if everyone knew how you put together the lists. but then again, this post would die.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

    This post will never die!

    I’m slowly cracking the code…

I know it’s bias against Paul Pierce and the Celtics, triple-doubles from anyone other than Chris Paul and it favors centers who dunk the ball 10-15 times a game over a real shooter.  (Quote)

  • Big D says:

That sucks. He was part of The Crunch Bunch. LT, Van Pelt, Harry Carson, and Brian Kelley.

So that answers the age-old question: “Who was the least known Giants’ Linebacker of the 80’s and 90’s?”  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

    mikey-

Nice use of “The Jason Kidd Triple Double”. Interestingly enough, Pau had what is known as a “True Jason Kidd Triple Double”. The difference is…

JKTD – All 3 categories in a triple double are 15 or less.
TJKTD – Of the 3 categories in a triple double the one with the highest total is 15 or less, the one with the second highest total is 13 or less, and the one with the lowest total is 11 or less.

The TJKTD was originally called a JKTD but was found to be too specific and was renamed the TJKTD and what is now the JKTD is more inclusive.

  • Fiesta Trio says:

GITC, you can’t please everyone, someone is always going to complain. Usually the people who don’t vote.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

I don’t discriminate against triple doubles at all. It’s just that most guys that get triple double are putting up low point totals which hurt them. Is Pau’s 12/13/10 really better than 24/14/2? No. triple doubles show a rounded stat line but not necessarily a great one. 10/10/10 is not as good as 50/3/1 as long as the shooting percentages are comparable.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

Grant Hill triple doubles were more impressive when they were going head to head in that.  (Quote)

  • sae says:

i vote and i complain. but i’m in illinois so technically my vote means nothing…  (Quote)

  • john says:

I don’t discriminate against triple doubles at all.

Notice how GITC doesn’t say anything about not discriminating against Paul Pierce and the Celtics. I’m on to you…
