I was trying to find a “strange” story to link up before the jump, but nothing was really that entertaining or funny. However, I did come across one story that is completely ludicrous.
Five lawmakers in Oregon want to pass a new bill that would raise the tax on beer. That is a pretty typical proposal, and one would think that you were looking at 5-10% tax hike on it. That might sound even a little high, but consider that Oregon is 49th in its tax on beer and hasn’t raised it in 32 years. The lawmakers were thinking even higher. 100%? Not a chance. Try 1900%!!! I cannot even comprehend such a ridiculous bill. Wait, yes I can…That is about as political as I get on here. I just can’t wait to get my $13.00 a week. Hey Marco and Hawkeye, that will pay for diapers!
DeJuan Blair was an aboslute animal last night in Storrs, as he scored 22 pts and ripped down 23 boards in Pittsburgh’s 76-68 victory over #1 ranked UConn. The Huskies definitely missed Jerome Dyson’s scoring punch, but losing with him missing in the lineup should help UConn move forward and figure out what they need to do to win without him. I expect Patphish to address this later today.
Rick Chandler over at Deadspin is saying that Tom Crean is not the answer at Indiana. I have to say that is the most premature declaration I have heard in quite sometime. The Hoosiers will be back soon. In fact, I will say that Indiana basketball will be back in the Final Four before Michigan football wins a BCS bowl game.
TWTWCBB will be back later today, but here is GITCs part of the post.
Amare Stoudamire rumors continue to swirl. I will take him in Detroit, because what we got isn’t working.
Rootzoo is couting down the top 200 players in NBA history. Really, Joe Dumars and Mark Jackson are only slightly better than Elden Campbell? I think GITC needs to critique this list as it unfolds.
Allen Iverson cut his hair over the weekend, apparently this is a big deal. Hope it makes him shoot better.
I think it may be time to let a D-Leaguer participate in the Slam Dunk contest.
Manny and the Dodgers need to stop being so damn stubborn and get this deal done.
If you had to take a 3B from the 90s, who would it be? Lawrence?
3 Cuban defectors may be the key to success for the White Sox in 2009.
Mathieu Schneider is returning to Montreal. Is hockey the only sport where you say to yourself, wait that guy is still playing?
The Penguins were supposed to be the team that took the mantle as the team of the future in the NHL away from Detroit. They may not make the playoffs, and just dropped their coach.
Michael Phelps beat the system!
The big name players are starting to be cut in the NFL as FA approaches. Chris McAlister was let go by the Ravens, and Fred Taylor is no longer a Jaguar.

no mention of mention of Blair grabbing Thabeet’s wrist and yanking him over his back, injuring him (did come back to play)…and Thabeet getting called for the foul. i bet patphish addresses this
and re schneider: that’s what i say about Chelios too

Jesplus…I agree.

sae- when Tampa Bay won the Cup a few years back, i overheard a couple of old guys talking about it, and one said; “Dave Andreychuk, I remember when his father was playing in the 80s.”

Pitt is really f’n good. They might be my national champs.
I’m going for 12 in a row…
(Quote)
also, you are right as to why I didn’t touch on the foul. I thought patphish might touch on it and didn’t want to blow up his spot.

+12, trey.

Lane Kiffin missed a free throw last night.
Your source for all things Kiffin…GatorTrey.

I really hope the Dodgers re-sign Manny. LA is the perfect town for him.

I wonder how much A-Roid is paying his teammates to join him at his press conference?
Wall of teammates to join A-Rod at press event

Your right about Hockey…Claude Lemieux is with the Sharks for some reason. Maybe that’s why there are collapsing right now.

Although baseball players try to play to a ripe old age, too.
Oil Can Boyd wants to pitch again
(Quote)
if Oil Can is really throwing 90 on the gun, why not?
(Quote)
Because he might throw the ball and his arm to the batter. Does everyone want to be like Favre and play beyond their prime?
(Quote)
I have no problem with guys that want to play. The thing that bothered me about Favre was his waffling on the issue and leaving the team hanging. Oh, and the slobberfests from Tony K and Peter King.
(Quote)
Agreed.
(Quote)
I think Nolan Ryan should pitch again. I’m sure he can still throw 95.

The Pitt-Uconn game was a nice little warmup for the real game of the week happening tonight. Also, Crean has done better than my 0-18 in Big Ten expectations for him.

kwsn- hummel playing?
(Quote)
May not make the playoffs?!?!?!
I’d say that it’s likely that they miss with a slight chance that they somehow go on an insane run and eek out the 8th spot. This is a shell of the team that they were last year
(Quote)
there is always hope in the NHL, johnny. teams rip off 8 wins a row all the time. even bad ones.

Celtics make a blockbuster trade
(Quote)
He played Saturday in very limited action. My guess is he’ll play and they were just warming him up for tonight.
(Quote)
sam cassel is going to become the Lindsay Hunter for the Celtics.
(Quote)
I know there’s hope but it’s unlikely. This team just seems to have quit

Someone at the WWL got the headline backasswards.

Going to the Magic game tonight, we’re gonna need some great PG play to get through this season. Iwas hoping for Cassell, but for some reason the Celtics didn’t want to deal him our way (imagine that)
Magic in 4.
(Quote)
ha! here i thought cassel was rotting on the bench in Sactown. I didn’t even think he was still playing with the Celtics.
(Quote)
As a Celtics fan, I’d be all for the Magic picking up Cassell.
It said the Kings might just buy him out, so if that’s the case I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up back in Boston as an assistant coach…which is pretty much what he was anyways.
(Quote)
the Celts just waiting for Marbury?
(Quote)
I hope not. Most likely making room for a big man.

Steve Kerr trades them Amare for a future 2nd rounder.
(Quote)
That’s crazy talk. Patrick O’Bryant, Scal and a future 1st for Bosh is more realistic.

What, is everybody on drugs this morning?

Is that when you stopped the PEDs?
(Quote)
