The Morning After: February 17, 2009

By sparty

tmalogoI was trying to find a “strange” story to link up before the jump, but nothing was really that entertaining or funny.  However, I did come across one story that is completely ludicrous.

Five lawmakers in Oregon want to pass a new bill that would raise the tax on beer.  That is a pretty typical proposal,  and one would think that you were looking at 5-10% tax hike on it.  That might sound even a little high, but consider that Oregon is 49th in its tax on beer and hasn’t raised it in 32 years.  The lawmakers were thinking even higher.  100%?  Not a chance.  Try 1900%!!! I cannot even comprehend such a ridiculous bill.  Wait, yes I can…That is about as political as I get on here.  I just can’t wait to get my $13.00 a week.  Hey Marco and Hawkeye, that will pay for diapers!

DeJuan Blair was an aboslute animal last night in Storrs, as he scored 22 pts and ripped down 23 boards in Pittsburgh’s 76-68 victory over #1 ranked UConn.  The Huskies definitely missed Jerome Dyson’s scoring punch, but losing with him missing in the lineup should help UConn move forward and figure out what they need to do to win without him.  I expect Patphish to address this later today.

Rick Chandler over at Deadspin is saying that Tom Crean is not the answer at Indiana. I have to say that is the most premature declaration I have heard in quite sometime.  The Hoosiers will be back soon. In fact, I will say that Indiana basketball will be back in the Final Four before Michigan football wins a BCS bowl game.

TWTWCBB will be back later today, but here is GITCs part of the post.

Amare Stoudamire rumors continue to swirl.  I will take him in Detroit, because what we got isn’t working.

Rootzoo is couting down the top 200 players in NBA history. Really, Joe Dumars and Mark Jackson are only slightly better than Elden Campbell?  I think GITC needs to critique this list as it unfolds.

Allen Iverson cut his hair over the weekend, apparently this is a big deal.  Hope it makes him shoot better.

I think it may be time to let a D-Leaguer participate in the Slam Dunk contest.

Manny and the Dodgers need to stop being so damn stubborn and get this deal done.

If you had to take a 3B from the 90s, who would it be?  Lawrence?

3 Cuban defectors may be the key to success for the White Sox in 2009.

Mathieu Schneider is returning to Montreal.  Is hockey the only sport where you say to yourself, wait that guy is still playing?

The Penguins were supposed to be the team that took the mantle as the team of the future in the NHL away from Detroit.  They may not make the playoffs, and just dropped their coach.

Michael Phelps beat the system!

The big name players are starting to be cut in the NFL as FA approaches.  Chris McAlister was let go by the Ravens, and Fred Taylor is no longer a Jaguar.

For your Tuesday Morning viewing pleasure (hang in there until the 45 sec mark):
