The Morning After: February 11, 2009

By GatorTrey

tmalogoWe here at Sparty and Friends would like to apologize for the outage we experienced yesterday. GITC fell off the stationary bike that
keeps the server goin, and thus…you see what happens. Fear not, I’m going to make it up to you with a very special TMA.

People have asked us here at Sparty and Friends, “Guys, how do you wake up every morning and put all these links together so that we can not only get our sports news, but our morning chuckle too?

Well friends, I GatorTrey will bring you behind the scenes on what type of work it takes to get this together.

5-6ish PM – The Day Before: Finish the work day with my last clever, yet thought provoking, comment in Happy Hour.

7PM – After trekking home from my office, I sit down to an eloquent 5 course meal prepared by our personal chef, Pierre. Pierre graduated from a culinary school in France and is well versed in all cuisines (especially those of the “Lean” variety).

8PM – TV time in the theater. This 90 inch High Definition screen was a gift from the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka after I made him laugh while he was reading TWTWCFB last October.

10PM – Prepare for bed, on Tuesday nights this includes a 20 minute deep tissue massage from Annalisa. She’s Swedish and is funded by A-Rod, after I promised to be nice to him in my TWTWB posts last summer.

11PM – Bedtime

11:05PM – This is usually where I’m like, “Oh shit, is tomorrow Wednesday?” followed by “That’s my TMA day! Dammit!” I hurry out of bed, spend about 30-60 minutes linking and writing interesting tidbits on the days news.

11:30-Midnight – Sleep

5:30 AM – Wake up, go to the gym with my personal trainer, Jessica Biel. She was a gift from Turner Broadcasting after I agreed not to bag on how irrelevantly boring the rookie v. sophomore challenge is.

7AM – Work!

You get the idea? You just want links don’t you…Losers.

Derek Jeter has expressed frustration over the A-Rod mess…Maybe because he says he quit juicing when he got to New York? Just time to suck in clutch situations in New York…is that it Jeets? Luckily, the feds have decided to avoid this one

Future trivia question!!! What do Miguel Tejada and Bill Clinton have in common?.

If  you’re the owner of the bong that Phelps smoked out of…and you know the local Sheriff said last week he was contemplating arresting Phelps for smoking out of said bong…what make you think throwing said bong on ebay would be smart…Must have taken a few rips before this genius plan.

Flying under the illegal substance radar…ladies and gentlemen Mr. Dirty Bird himself…Jamal Anderson.

The NCAA says they will not jeopardize the integrity of the NCAA tournament to help with the current economic hardship…and your scores…including Kentucky’s win over Florida.

“At UCLA, we graduate our athletes.”

The Cavs can quit bitching now…Mo Williams is an All Star…And what NBA trade deadline would be complete without a blockbuster deal…And the rest of your NBA evening.

Sean Avery is getting a second chance…again…Still better than the deal Antonio Margarito got

Now kick back, drink your java, and enjoy hump day.

    Hawkeye- tax payer money?  (Quote)

Zygi Wilf would contribute a whole $250 million to it. The rest would have to be raised by local or state taxes or out of a general fund.  (Quote)

Somewhere Marco is reading this and trying not to yell loud profanities in front of his new baby. Shaughnessy defending A-Rod…

    Critics overdose on hate  (Quote)

  • GatorTrey says:

    Of course Sparty.

I have no objections to tax payer money being used when times are going well AND the team gives a good percentage.

But we’re in a major economic downturn that has forced the city/county/state governments to cut a lot out of the budget.

NFL stadiums are tough too. They are used at max, 10-12 times a year.

Compare that to a NBA/NHL arena which is used 150-200 dates a year.  (Quote)

  • john says:

But we’re in a major economic downturn that has forced the city/county/state governments to cut a lot out of the budget.

We’re in an economic downturn? I hadn’t heard.  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

The fact a stadium an be used so little is my major problem with throwing that much money into it. The Wilfs want an open air stadium, which is great for football, not great for the other 8 months of the year where it won’t/cant be used.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

Trey- the Giants/Jets are not using tax dollars. of course season ticket holders are taking the hit.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

Hawkeye- the Vikings had the best HFA before they moved into the Metrodome.  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

    Um……what’s HFA?  (Quote)

  • john says:

I’m guessing the Twins new ballpark is being helped out quite a bit by tax payers, right?…so the odds of the state helping out on two new stadiums are probably slim.  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

We’re in an economic downturn? I hadn’t heard.

news to me as well…  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

john – correct. It’s a Hennepin county (where Minneapolis is) wide sales tax of 0.15%. I had little problem with that one since there will likely be a taxable receipts uptick due to the 80+ dates in the new stadium, and because the Metrodome sucks for baseball.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

Hawkeye- i don’t know if you are joking or not.  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

Just clicked what HFA is. Bone chilling cold helped alot, but the noise from the Dome also is a huge advantage.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

weather conditions are much bigger help if you ask me. then again, Eli struggles at home when the winds pick up. wonder if the wind will be the same in the new stadium.  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

Well, we’re talking about Eli here. And the weather at Lambeau has not been a great help last few years for the Pack.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

I am all up for the stationary bike thing.
I have been lurking a little but the cell phone industry is not standing still and we had a little work to do before the big Barcelona trade show.
    Cell phone conference

Need to provide that real time streaming sports video and scores to your smart phones.

Actually did the stationary bike last night. I was going to work out this morning but the wife had other plans.

I am now on the no cookie, cake or ice cream diet this month. I never really diet but in my old age I am finding it tougher to shed my extra winter pounds. I also bought a new scale since my old one varied up to 5 lbs based upon which way you leaned. Turned out, it was reading low.

Never got to comment on the whole A-Rod thing. Did anyone seriously think that there was even a chance he was clean? If so, that Sri Lankan prince wants to send you the $3M right away. Nice that he admits it when a) he was playing for a different team and b) before it was against MLB’s rules. I don’t believe he has been clean since but then again, I don’t believe anyone in pro sports is clean.

Glad to be back and flooding the comments sections with my long rambling rants.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

that’s because Brett Favre sucks.  (Quote)

  • john says:

The crownd noise in a dome is only an advantage when the team pumps it through the PA system. *cough*Colts*cough*  (Quote)

shit, Seattle pumps it through the pa system, and they are an outdoor stadium.  (Quote)

Hey, my long post never made it on the comments section. Trying this one.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

Shit, I lost my post. Oh well. I was just saying that I would be happy to ride the stationary bike for the sake of keeping S&F’s going.

Also was saying that I have been lurking but just crazy busy at work here. Big trade show in Barcelona to make sure that you guys can get your streaming sports video and scores on your smart phones not to mention update your blogs.

  • cycledan says:

Just need to make my one and only comment on A-Rod. I got into a discussion with a coworker where he wasn’t sure if A-Rod doped. I told him I was 100% sure he did. People are so naive and this guy has a PhD in math so he is no dummy either.
For $28M/year, I am doping. Hell, for $1M/year, I am doping. I took 4 aspirin before a high school football game so I could play with a dislocated collar bone. So for a $250M contract, I would cut off my left pinky – and I earn a lot more than A-Rod would if he didn’t play baseball. … and I don’t believe for a second that he stopped in 2003. However, I am still going to root for him this season because he is no worse than any other player. 103 tested positive. They can only catch a small percentage of the cheats and only if they test them at the right times for the right substances. I would say conservatively that 60-75% of MLB players dope. And I really don’t care.  (Quote)

Brett Favre to inform New York Jets of his retirement.
