When I left my house last night at 7pm, Michigan State had an early 5 pt lead at the Breslin, and I had very little concern about the game. It seemed like the team made the necessary adjustments they needed because Raymar Morgan was still battling a wicked flu. About an hour and a half later I picked up my phone to get an update on the final score to see how much we won by. There was a slight problem:
WE LOST! Northwestern 70, Michigan St 63 – We don’t lose at the Breslin Center! We certainly don’t lose to Northwestern at the Breslin Center. What the crap happened? I’ll tell you what happened! No I won’t, because I keep looking at the stat sheet and can’t figure it out for the life of me how we lost the game. it is not as if Northwestern dominated at any part of the game. The only thing that jumps out at me is that we shot 40% from the field and 18 TOs. Izzo had been telling his players that a game like this was going to happen because they had been practicing like dog doodoo. The man is a prophet.
Va Tech 78, Wake Forest 71 - GITC is probably salivating about the Hokies pulling this one out. Soon to be formerly #1 ranked Wake Forest was obviously was looking ahead to their big game with Duke, and that is a big big no no in college hoops. The Demon Deacons trailed for most of the game, and by much as 16 pts, but could never get it closer than 2 or take the lead. If this means Va Tech is awesome, that means Northwestern is da bomb. The worst part of Wake losing is that the new #1 will be these guys.
South Carolina 70, Florida 69 – The Gators were in the midst of a 10 game win streak, they had just returned to the Top 25, so things were looking good Gainsville. For a brief summary of what happened from a Gator(Trey) fan perspective, click here.
And if the night wasn’t already a little screwy…
New Jersey Institute of Technology 61, Bryant 51 – Why is this such a big deal? Well, the Highlanders of NJIT had not won a game since February of 2007. That is almost 2 years without a victory. Who thought that a win over a 3-16 could be considered an upset?!? Congrats to the Highlanders, and we hope for your next win comes much sooner than your last.
So what do all these upsets mean? Well, for Michigan State and Florida I don’t think it will mean too much, as I expect Billy D and Izzo to get their teams focused again. Wake might be looking at a 2 game losing streak after they go up against Duke, which could put their conference season in a slight tailspin. As for NJIT, just enjoy the win fellas, it has been a looooooooonnnng time.

3rd straight L for the Badgers, been a while since that happened. Tough game at Illinois coming up Saturday too, then Purdue and the titans that are NW

NW has been playing well, regardless of their record. but that is game we need to win.

After Uconn disposes of another ranked team on the road, they should jump Puke and be # 1. Best team in the best conference.

at least my real alma mater won, now 16-2
/Div III disclaimer
funny, we opened the year with a victory at Bradley, but Bradley doesn’t list the game on their schedule

How is the Big East the best conference?
It sure isn’t by power ranking or RPI. In fact I think it’s third in the RPI. Big East is the biggest, but carries dead weight.

patphish- you know better than that. no way the voters let anyone jump Dook.

you know wake is facing off against duke next, so they might have a chance.
(Quote)
Fucking seriously! We make the 1st thing on SportsCenter because we take the last three seconds of the game off.

jp-new rankings will be out before that game.

ark, yeah I’m from closer to GB, but now transplanted to the Chicago area

GITC, I disagree. I was very disappointed in Lost last night.

Hey Sparty, can we start a post saying Florida forward Dan Werner is a definite top 10 pick. That way he leaves this offseason?
I think the Gator Nation would agree.

Trey-all you.
(Quote)
trey, I’ve already begun a campaign to keep Werner in school all four years and am petitioning the NCAA for a fifth, and possibly sixth, year of eligibility.

gatortrey, i didn’t get to watch the game last night, but i assume that the geytors didn’t shoot lights out from behind the arc like they did in the second half against the razorbacks last saturday? saw the highlights of that last play on the local news last night and couldn’t believe that shit…

ark, we had a 7 point lead with 1:30 left, and blew it. Crazy way to lose.
(Quote)
that is a much more frustrating loss than what we suffered.

“Too many turnovers by the guards and the bigs,” said Kalin Lucas, who led Michigan State with 20 points. “We’ve got to do a better job of being focused.”
This always kills me. I would have done anything to play for a big ten team, to take it for granted and not focus on every game is just a big pet peeve of mine.

I’m waiting to see if he claims some sort of happiness at NW’s win. Then I will call him out on stabbing NW in the back.

you know that is inevitable.

@ GITC. Best teams. Therefore best conference. RPI, power ranking, and GITC Tier system can all suck it. Watch the games. ACC has 3-4 nice teams and a pile O’ crap.
