What in the Hell?

By sparty

When I left my house last night at 7pm, Michigan State had an early 5 pt lead at the Breslin, and I had very little concern about the game.  It seemed like the team made the necessary adjustments they needed because Raymar Morgan was still battling a wicked flu.  About an hour and a half later I picked up my phone to get an update on the final score to see  how much we won by.  There was a slight problem:

WE LOST! Northwestern 70, Michigan St 63 – We don’t lose at the Breslin Center!  We certainly don’t lose to Northwestern at the Breslin Center.  What the crap happened?  I’ll tell you what happened! No I won’t, because I keep looking at the stat sheet and can’t figure it out for the life of me how we lost the game.  it is not as if Northwestern dominated at any part of the game.  The only thing that jumps out at me is that  we shot 40% from the field and 18 TOs.  Izzo had been telling his players that a game like this was going to happen because they had been practicing like dog doodoo.  The man is a prophet.

Va Tech 78, Wake Forest 71 - GITC is probably salivating about the Hokies pulling this one out.  Soon to be formerly #1 ranked Wake Forest was obviously was looking ahead to their big game with Duke, and that is a big big no no in college hoops.  The Demon Deacons trailed for most of the game, and by much as 16 pts, but could never get it closer than 2 or take the lead.  If this means Va Tech is awesome, that means Northwestern is da bomb.  The worst part of Wake losing is that the new #1 will be these guys.

South Carolina 70, Florida 69 – The Gators were in the midst of a 10 game win streak, they had just returned to the Top 25, so things were looking good Gainsville.  For a brief summary of what happened from a Gator(Trey) fan perspective, click here.

And if the night wasn’t already a little screwy…

New Jersey Institute of Technology 61, Bryant 51 – Why is this such a big deal?  Well, the Highlanders of NJIT had not won a game since February of 2007.  That is almost 2 years without a victory.  Who thought that a win over a 3-16 could be considered an upset?!?  Congrats to the Highlanders, and we hope for your next win comes much sooner than your last.

So what do all these upsets mean?  Well, for Michigan State and Florida I don’t think it will mean too much, as I expect Billy D and Izzo to get their teams focused again. Wake might be looking at a 2 game losing streak after they go up against Duke, which could put their conference season in a slight tailspin.  As for NJIT, just enjoy the win fellas, it has been a looooooooonnnng time.
