The Morning After: January 18, 2009

By mizerle06

tma-weekendGood Sunday morning!  I’ll be your guest Sunday morning TMA’er today as our resident phish named pat is celebrating getting old.

Unfortunately, if you’re reading this, the weekend’s already over halfway over.  I guess they can’t last forever, right?  Good news though, there’s a bunch of links and sports-related jazz to satisfy your cravings right after the jump.  Join me…

I knew for certain that one of the undefeateds would go down yesterday since Wake and Clemson were playing each other, but I didn’t expect the winner of that game to emerge as the only undefeated left after this weekend.

Here’s some math to get those brainwaves movin’ this morning: Lebron + Kobe = MJ.  I think this writer may be stretching a bit, but it’s an interesting point.

I had actually forgotten that the Rams and the Raiders were both in the market for head coaches this offseason.  Looks like the Rams filled that spot and hired Steve Spagnuolo away from the Giants.  I knew the Jets had interest in Spags, but hadn’t heard much about the Rams’.

Just what the NBA needs, another allegation that “The Association” is shady.

Looks like there was some drama in Rhode Island last night when a fan, also a brother of a Providence player, decided he needed to have a discussion with the refs.  By the way, Marquette’s coach needs to not be a little pansy.

You can find all the college basketball scores from yesterday here.

In case you’ve wondered recently, here’s a list of college players with eligibility still left who are entering ‘09 NFL Draft.

This week, the SEC was excluded from CBB polls marking the first time in several years that an entire conference has been absent from the polls.  Ugh.

I was amused by this story about Chinese hoops getting physical.

Ahhhh, USC basketball.  It’s become almost a cult joke with their primadona and preteen recruits.  Now, witness the curious case of DeMar DeRozen.

So 7th graders are now college basketball prospects?  Really NCAA?  Hurry, somebody call Tim Floyd!

Utah’s HC Kyle Whittingham wins the Bryant Award.  For those of you unfamiliar with the Bryant Award, it’s named for Bear Bryant, the greatest coach in the history of history, and awarded each year to the coach that makes the best claim for a national championship that didn’t actually win it.

Harvard’s LSU’s Harvard’s Andrew Hatch reveals he is actually Andrea Hatch, a female (you know, because he seems to have indecision problems).

I’m not sure if I’m surprised at all by any of the coaches’ responses here when asked about whether they consider the BCS when scheduling out of conference.

The NASCAR Truck Series will be discussing limiting pit stops this season.  That may not sound like much to you non-NASCAR peeps, but pistops work into a team’s strategy and “game plan” for races.  Races, at all levels of racing, are regularly won and/or lost on pit stop strategy and performance.  Limiting pit stops would be akin to an odd combo of limiting timeouts in basketball and limiting pitching changes in baseball.

When Toyota first committed to NASCAR, the diehard fans were pissed because a foreign carmaker would be represented in an American dominated and marketed sport.  Rival teams and carmakers, however, were worried about Toyota’s deep pockets and intense drive to be the best showing them up in “thier” series.  It only took a couple of years for Toyota to establish itself as a player after winning 10 races in the Cup Series and 20 races in the Nationwide Series during the 2008 seasons.  Now though, Toyota may cut funding for its Toyota Racing Development program, which includes its NASCAR operations.

Yao was 12-for-12 last night!  I bet he’d make GITC’s Studs list if there was one today.  Here’s all the NBA scores from yesterday.

Last Friday, our resident Lebron commercial sleuth cracked the mystery behind the…ummmm…mysterious 1.18.09 commercial.  Now, the video’s officially out so Cleveland fans can actually live the dream now:

Stay tuned to Sparty & Friends for NFL conference championship coverage today.  Mikey will be leading the charge.

I’m disappointed in the LeBron “announcement”. I thought it would really be something special.

I hope Spagnuolo can bring back some D to the Rams. I thought we were pretty good decent when we had Lovie Smith.

    repost from yesterday:

JP, who are your college teams?

    as seen here

i do not have direct school loyalty to the NCAA teams, but i love Michigan State, UCLA, the Jesuit Schools (since i graduated from a Jesuit university here in Manila) and for the short-term, Western Kentucky (you have to figure that one out though).

speaking of Michigan State, the emergence of Von Wafer in Houston this season can be credited to the coaching of some guy named Shawn Respert.

Since no one else is here, I’ll vent:

I hope the Lakers and Magic don’t meet up in the Finals. I could not handle seven games with Jameer Nelson’s mouthpiece. I just want to slap it off his face. And stop touching it; nobody wants your slobber all over the bball. Who knows what cooties you have. End vent,

The Magic played a very good game. Toward the end I could feel that the Lakers were going to lose because the Magic’s 3s are unstopable and the Lakers’ D needs some serious attitude adjustment.

I haven’t seen Cleveland play this year (Monday I will), but I think the Magic and Cavs will be in the eastern finals.

My weekend is NOT half over. I get Monday off for MLK day. I have never had that off before this company. However since July 4th is a Saturday, we are not getting that off, not even the 3rd which sucks.
I would gladly trade a day off in January for one in July.

Trey at Hooters? The link asks me to join the Knox News network, which is way too muc to ask of the Treo. I left the comp at the office.

Coincidence? I was at Universal yesterday with my little sidter’s best friend. Who is a bartender at that fine family establishment. Knox news pick up that story?

As far as the Magic…Jameer schooled Chauncy last night…

Still riding a high off that Syracuse 19 point victory over Notre Dame. I got down a bit after they got blown out by Georgetown but things swing around.
Tomorrow the Cuse takes on #1 Former #1 Pitt.
Not always good to play a former #1 on the road after they just got beat on the road.
Still, I am lookng forward to the game.

Snowing hard here on Long Island. My son’s basketball team plays tonight at 6 PM but I don’t expect any cancellations.

Going to call my friends and see if they want to try breaking out the cross country skiis.

I just read that NBA article from above and I have to point out, that guy is an idiot. He basically looked at everything from either the most over the top cynical way or ways that were just wrong. What a moron.

NBC really does do hockey fairly well and the Pens look really good this afternoon but they’re only up 1-0 even though they’ve completely out played the Rangers. They really do need to start winning these conference games
