BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

/kidding

But Rice does deserve to get in. I don't think he's a roider. He was intimidated and made a WS twice. From the late 1970s and early 80s, was there a better DH than Jim Rice?

Well the worst thing you can do as a hitter is either strike out or hit into a double play. Reggie did a lot of that. He swang for the fences but I remember him hitting 240 or 250 a lot of years. I also remember some poor defense.

Granted, early in his career for the A's, Reggie was probably a better all around player but that was before my time.

Kind of like my feelings about Favre. Great player, no doubt. His consecutive game streak is astounding. However he also leads QBs all time in negative stats such as INTs as well as TDs. Need to take that into account.

Big D- Rice is feeling my wrath. There are several guys who don't belong. Phil Rizzuto for starters. Blame the Vets Committee for that one.

More than Reggie? The greatest thing you can do as a hitter in baseball is hit a HR...He his 563. Apparently PEDs didn't exist in baseball at that time. So that would be about 1000 if he played in the 90s.

Sparty - you want to know when the HoF became the Hall of Pretty Good?

Try 1984 when Luis Aparicio got elected.
Or again in '01 when Bill Mazeroski got in for, essentially, one hit.

It's not like it hasn't happened before.

EVen as a Yankee fan, I have no problem with Jim Rice getting in. Maybe I am a bit older than a bunch of you on this blog (42 years old) and remember Rice distinctly. I am not as big a fan of career stats as I am of the top 2 or 3 years a player played. Granted, longevity and consistency over a career are necessary as well.

My criteria is that a player has to be the best at his position for a period of time. The argument that baseball in the 70's wasn't as good falls flat with me. Every era can only be compared to its own era. Just saying Rice didn't have the same stats as Ruth or Mantle doesn't work either. If that was the case, then only one person would be admitted ever 5 years.

In 1978, my favorite season of all time, Rice was the man. He was an amazing hitter and the most feared hitter on the best lineup in baseball.

Today, baseball has lost the talent (sadly so) of American born blacks which makes it not as competitive but we have gained all that international talent, mainly from South America that has really raised the level of talent.

To me, Rice was the best hitter of his time for at least a couple of years and my gut and my memories tell me he belongs. He belongs more than Reggie Jackson, Mark McGuire or Sammy Sosa.

read it back to himself and say not say “i am so going to get shit for saying this”?

Shanoffian. Rosey probably asked: "What can I write to guarantee that I get shit for this."

Or, Easterbrookian, Shaugnessian. They're like Heels in the WWE.
