The Morning After: December 16, 2008

By sparty

Things really have been interesting as of late here at Sparty & Friends.  We seem to be on the tip of  peoples tongue as of late.  We have had several new commenters stop by to enjoy the witty intelligent insightful goofy banter around these parts.  Just as it starts to get really rolling, real life decides to show up.

What do I mean by that?  Well, you are going to see less of me with the when it comes to posting The Morning After for starters.  You may not see me commenting as much after hours either.  I am not stepping away completely, but  you will find the much more talented writers of S&Fs getting your day going with your morning read on a more regular basis for the immediate future.  How long will that go on? Hopefully not too long.   I love it that I have people that come here each day to get their sports news update.  However,  there are things that just need to be taken care of when I am not at my real job.

I will still try to provide analysis and reaction to things that are going on in the sports world if time is available.  I don’t anticipate being slowed for long.

NBA firings just keep happening.  The most recent casualty is Reggie Theus, who was let go by the Kings.  You always have Hang Time, Reggie.

That is the 6th firing in the NBA since the season started a month and a half ago.  Flip Saunders is still without a job, and  he is better than all these yahoo’s.

Charles Barkley is one angry black man.   The former Auburn Tiger is accusing his alma mater of racism for not hiring Tuner Gill instead of Gene Chizak.

Mitch Lawerence is always about stoking the rumor mill fires.  I get that D’Antoni Steve Nash’s former coach, and they have a great connection, but there is not a chance in hell the Knicks waste any money on him next summer while they wait to grab LeBron and another big name free agent.  Oh, and Joe Dumars is not shopping Rasheed Wallace(bottom of the page).

Some “mystery team” has offered Andy Pettitte a 3 year $36 million  deal.  I cannot see this team being the Red Sox, that just isn’t a Theo move.  That most certainly could the the Dodgers, or the Angels.

The Angels didn’t accomplish what they wanted at the winter meetings, could they be considering Manny?  Manny and Vlad, that is scary.

Barry Bonds is hanging on by a thread.  Dude, nobody is giving you a job.

Jamie Moyer finally won a World Series, and wants to do it again.  But what up with the Chan-Ho Park signing?

The Titans won’t just be without Haynesworth, but now they will be missing Kyle Vanden Bosch for the remainder of the regular season.

I gave you analysis of the WCNYFG yesterday, RomanWarHelmet tells you how we feel.

The longest tenured GM in the NFL to not win a Super Bowl has finally been let go resigned.  Carl Peterson stepped down from his position that he held for 20 years.  You know that means Herm Edwards is outta there too.  Psst, Scott Pioli.

Um…riiiiiiiight.  Wait, it is Cleveland, makes sense.

The AFL canceled their upcoming season.  Time for these guys to bag groceries.  It worked for Kurt Warner.

Sleeper pick for next years Heisman.

The worst kept secret was confirmed. “Dad, I don’t care if you want to see your grand kids, you are working late tonight.”

Re: Arena League – It was pretty big in its heyday here in Orlando. In fact they sold out something like 5 staright seasons.

The league got away from what made people go and tried to become an important sport nationally. Moving games from Fridas to Sundays…Changing rules so commoners could understand it…Moving the championship game to a neutral site

Sure it was hokie, but it was also a very very entertaining live sporting event. Ultimately wanting to be bigger was their undoing.  (Quote)

i know this isnt official…but how is it possible to have pockets this deep and not be able to succeed in what was once popular sport

Expansion fee for an Arena Football franchise is currently $20 million.

However, the AFL Board of Directors also require that you have a net worth of more than $60 million, after your expansion fee. They will also have to approve your application into the league as well.

So, basically your looking at a total of $80 million dollars in the bank(so to speak) and approval from the league to get your AFL franchise.

so, i didn’t really make it around a computer last night to live-blog mrs. mizerle’s reaction to me breaking the news about the bet so I’ll provide a brief synopsis:

me: Hey babe. I made this bet with Trey; you know, the guy I met on the internet and then arranged to meet in person at the Old Spice Classic. well, we picked some bowl games and I agreed that if I lose, I have to wear shorty-short jorts.

mrs. miz: what happens if he loses?

me: he has to sing Rocky Top

    mrs. miz: and…?

    me: that’s all.

mrs. miz: so you have to walk around in short jorts and you still want me to go to the game with you?

    me: yeah…ok?

mrs. miz: *disgusted* you’re a moron. *rolls eyes*  (Quote)

I bet a $1 bill signed with “you were right, I was wrong” and then insert the terms of the bet, something like “LSU beat Virginia Tech” (I can’t believe I bet for the Hokies…. ) and then sign…. pride and shame are much better than cash… but I guess jorts is a great 2nd choice.  (Quote)

  • cmfost says:

and what is with no mention of 2 teams tying or breaking records for the best start in their respective leagues history.

San Jos Sharks with their last win become the fastest team in league history to 50 points.

Boston Celtics tied the league record at 23-2 for the best record after 25 games.  (Quote)

oooooh…the early burn from TBL on the vids…they didnt even mention the game  (Quote)

hockey pts records don’t count. they changed the rules a few years ago, so if someone breaks the Red Wings record from 95, it doesn’t mean as much.

celtics will get their dap when they break it.  (Quote)

celtics will get their dap when they break it.

+1 for writing “when” and not “if”.  (Quote)

  • cmfost says:

You may not consider what San Jose did impressive but look at the numbers:

    • With 52 points, the Sharks passed the 1929-30 Bruins and set an NHL record for the most points through the first 30 games of the season.

    • San Jose picked up its 25th win of the season, tying the 1929-30 Bruins for the most victories in the first 30 games of the season.

    • The Sharks improved to 12-0-1 in their last 13 games.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

but now you have OT and a shootout to win a game. not as impressive.  (Quote)

  • gatortrey says:

    Mikey,

I am guilty of that. Which is why I qualify it with the outcome relies on me. Usually it’s a bad bet for me though.

    Like Sunday…  (Quote)

    is that my source?  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

john-these celtics are even better. someone needs to calm perkins down, already has 9 technical fouls this year.  (Quote)

  • john says:

Perkins never thinks he commits a foul, that’s his problem. When he gets called for one he always looks at the ref, with the same “what did I do wrong?” look and that’s where almost all his T’s come from.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

    sounds a lot like Laimbeer.

You can’t say that about Sheed. He usually goes off because he doesn’t think it is getting called both ways equally…every once in awhile you can hear him say good call when he fouls a guy. of course, he could just be patronizing the refs.  (Quote)

  • knightwhosaysni says:

john, I was referencing the best postgame interview ever.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

As the resident Syracuse fan here, I just have to comment again on that buzzer beater. Not being able to get the game on TV, I followed it with updates on the Internet. I called my friend who is a Syracuse alumnus and huge fan. He said I hope to god you are calling me to tell me how much they are up by. Well no, it was tied at halftime. OK, they will pull away in the 2nd half and by tourney time, this will be all forgotten. Well not quite.

Down 5 with under a minute, Syracuse sinks a 3, misses a 3 then puts in a layup with 5 seconds to go. OK, OT is not the end of the world. Then I see Cleveland State makes a 60 foot 3 pointer! How could that be.

After watching it on Sportcenter and now on the YouTube links, I still can’t believe it. When they have the top 10 plays of the year in college basketball, that is up there. It is one thing to throw one meaningless half court shot up but another to throw it in as time expires to win the game. Damn.

But congrats to Cleveland State. They actually have a good team, put it all together and came up with a miraculous win.  (Quote)

  • knightro says:

The Celtics are definitely on a roll. But they aren’t exactly running away from the Cavs and Lakers.

And I love how Boston fans are already handing out superlatives and touting records at this point. But just for a minute, let’s remember how it turned out for the last Boston team that bulldozed the regular season. I’m just sayin’…  (Quote)

  • gatortrey says:

Knightro, no love for the hometown boys?

4 of 5 on a west coact road trip, 2 games without the big man, and the only loss on a late layup by Grant Hill?  (Quote)

  • knightro says:

This bunch does not need me to point out how the Magic are doing. Let them keep sneering and ignoring the Magic. All in good time, Trey. All in good time.

Also, who is this Grant Hill you speak of? The same Grant Hill who played at Duke and dazzle Pissed-on fans in Detroit? I thought him and Penny Hardaway were living in a home for athletes with unrealized potential in south Florida somewhere.  (Quote)

  • john says:

If the Pats had Paul Pierce last season they would have finished 19-0.  (Quote)

They live next door to Isaac Austin…  (Quote)

  • cmfost says:

Yeah the 2007-2008 Boston Celtics, which is the last Boston team to Bulldoze through the Regular , Won the Championship, So what is your point.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

they had a really good regular season last year, but i wouldn’t say it was anything that was great.  (Quote)

  • knightro says:

    18-1
