The Morning After: December 15, 2008

By mikeychx

The Morning AfterThe Morning After isn’t going to write itself. So, I sit…trying to keep my eyes open while all of my pals at Sparty and Friends are tucked in between the sheets –  I’m struggling to come up with some words. Lucky, I am watching the late SportsCenter and I can project with certainty that this years Heisman Trophy winner will be another in a long line of trophy winners who will fail miserably in the NFL.

Todd McShay projected that the Lions will take Sam Bradford at #1 overall in the ‘09 NFL Draft. This requires that Bradford actually declare for the Draft. Bradford plans to gauge teams interest by gathering info regarding his draft status…If that info comes back as ” You are most likely going to go #1 Overall” – I think I would be inclined to stay in school.

cimg3084As a side note…I am giving you McShay’s other top four in addition to Bradford in the photo here on the right. Stafford #3 to the Chiefs? The announcer was happy to point out that Tim Tebow was no where to be found in the top five. (side note part two: all are underclassmen)

Now, correct me  if I am wrong…but its a virtual lock that the Lions will go 0-16 right? The number one pick in the draft is yours. Your team ranks 30th in offense and 31st in defense. The average score in games played so far this year is 32-17…it’s time to be honest with yourself… are you a quarterback away from respectability? Let’s say Bradford is good for another TD per game…youre still giving up a TD too much.

The Lions have wayyyy to many problems and have drafted poorly on offense long enough. This is obvious to all of us right? So why is Todd McShay and Mel Kiper projecting either Bradford or Matthew Stafford to the Lions. Aren’t the “experts” supposed to identify a teams needs and project accordingly? You’ve  got Culpepper for another year, there are guys like Derek Andersen, Matt Cassel, David Carr, Byron Leftwich, Chris Simms, Alex Smith, and possibly even Michael Vick available for millions instead of the $60M it will take to sign a first round QB. Trade that #1 pick for another lower #1 pick, two #2s, and two #3s and rebuild your fucking team already. Besides…how did your last #1 QB pick go for you?

The expert draft analysis levied by McShay and Kiper is a big reason that more and more fans are turning to blogs to weigh in on obvious matters to the avid fan….and in most cases the casual fan as well.

Note for all of you the Tennessee fans that frequent Sparty and Friends. The Sporting News confirmed the worst kept secret evAr when it confirmed that Monte Kiffin will indeed follow his son Lane to UT.

I wish I could fill you in on Albert Haynesworth’s knee, but his MRI is scheduled for sometime today. Haynesworth being out definetly hampers the Titans chances of going all the way. Karma’s a bitch huh Albert?

I held off on the Giants loss to the Cowboys until this point because I wanted our boss to be in a good mood today. I will speak nothing further of it because I already covered this after week nine. So, now I know that Sparty is in a bad mood…let me put him back in a great mood.

I would love to recap all of the games…but why do it when I can just link to it? Besides, there were some okay games this week, but nothing compares to all of the good games next week with the Steelers @ Titans and Panthers @ Giants for all of the marbles …home field advantage wise…on the line.

Poll time….I am thinking at this point that the NFL MVP comes down to three guys. Troy Polamalu, Matt Ryan, and Michael Turner. You got better ideas? Maybe Eli Manning…Kurt Warner? DeMarcus Ware? Clinton Portis?

Who else qualifies? I tell you what…I give you a poll with my guys and a spot for “other.” I haven’t used this feature on the poll before…so hopefully it all works out.

[polldaddy poll=1198179]

Sean Avery doesnt get to go back to the Stars….Kevin Garnett is in a major market now so his antics are more publicized, my personal favorite because as much as I loved Steve Kerr as a player I think hes a bad GM…Pictures this…this is what the refs get for all of the terrible calls this year

Speaking of terrible calls….I am pretty sure I am not the only one who thought this was a little bush league at a “prestigious” ceremony like the Heisman. I know there is some shit I missed but its 225am in the west….(Dont feel too bad, I am off for the rest of the year)….but this post needs to be up in a half hour and I am going to bed in a half hour. All of our online sleuths send us tips and updates to spartyandfriends@gmail.com so we can get that stuff up too.

See you this afternoon for FBB Update and Analysis.
