Friday is finally upon us. I am looking at the work that I have to do today,
and cannot wait until this workday is over. A lot to get done between now and Christmas. It gets pretty dead the week after any holiday weekend, but especially quiet after that one. Prior to that? All hell breaks loose.
I rely upon this site to keep my sanity throughout the day. I love chit chatting about sports, and was never a big fan of message boards, too busy. Thank God we broke away from the bondage that was Dan Shanoff. That self inflicted pain became too great.
Anyway….
Like Father Like Son? There have been quite a few athletes that had their sons follow in their footsteps, some kids have even managed to be better than their pops. Ken and Ken Griffey Jr., Bobby and Brett Hull, Bobby and Barry Bonds, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. Even some daughters have risen to success in their father’s sport. However, how many actually duplicate their father’s style…
That is Barry Sanders Jr. He is only a freshman. That run took place in the state semi finals. The one huge difference that I can see? Senior never showed that much excitement on a TD.
Last year TO was crying about how Tony Romo was his teammate, his quarterback…now he is very jealous of Romo’s relationship with Witten. It is about time TO got pissed at him. The best part is that the WR’s met with Jason Garrett privately to discuss offense. FANTASTIC! For those that say this is an Ed Werder fabrication…If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck….
Javon Ringer was not the best running back in the country this year, apparently. I demand a recount! Actually, Shonn Greene was a stud. Too bad he couldn’t get 1 measley yard when he needed to against Michigan State. Here are all the College Football Award winners.
Tebowner, get it?!
The Mets and the Phillies have become bigger rivals over the last couple years, they might even be the second biggest rivalry in the MLB. Exhibit A.
No huge deals made yesterday in Vegas. Burnett is not a Yankee, yet. Teixeira is not on the Red Sox, yet. Jake Peavy is not on the Cubs, yet (ignore the Angles talk). Manny Ramirez is not still on the Dodgers, yet. These will all be worked out over the next few weeks, which is usually the case.
Andy Pettite is being advised that it is pretty simple: $10 Million, or see you later.
Some Friday non-sports links
Top 50 Greatest Guy Movies of the 1990s. Spencer should be really happy with #17.
You want to see a big upcoming guy movie trailer? If you can get by the Japanese subtitles, enjoy Terminator: Salvation. Christian Bale is becoming the king of the relaunch.
Happy Friday!

Despite my moniker, I’m a HUGE Cubs fan (but Nats season ticket holder…. f’in geography).
More importantly, I spent the last 30 minutes with that list of movies and my netflix open so I could some….. great list there, but I’m surprised Boondock Saints is so low. If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend it. If you liked True Romance, you will love this — except for the Willem Defoe scene.
Tex to the Nats…. It’s gonna happen.
And, if Jim Hendry or Jim Bowden is reading this, here’s a way to make the JP deal work with the Padres. The Nationals have an excess of corner outfielders and even a few spare 1B. Nats send Milledge, Maxwell, and a lower level scrub to the Padres. The Cubs send an outfield and pitching prospect to the Padres. The Padres send Jake Peavy to the Cubs. The Cubs send Jason Marquis and an infield prospect to the Nationals. Perhaps the Nats could work in Nick Johnson into the deal somehow (but would probably have to eat some of his $5M). That helps the Padres shed the JP salary, helps the Cubs shed the Marquis salary (and the excess starting pitcher), and helps the Nationals with the veteran arm they covet. And, if we could get the Cubs to eat some Nick Johnson salary, then picking up Marquis would almost be a wash even.

Boondock Saints is a vastly underrated movie.

People always ask me how I started liking the Avs (and about the Eagles since I don’t live in South Jersey)…I never really was into hockey when I was younger since we didn’t have any leagues so I never played it…when I finally kinda started getting into it, the Nordiques just moved to Colorado and I just picked up on them probably b/c I root for the Rockies too (don’t know how that one happened though..just picked up on them when they started up)…so I just started with the Avs and have seen 2 Stanley Cups in my day…at least one of my teams fielded a winner.

natsfan–If the Nats get Tex, I’ll be displeased…I don’t wanna face him 18 games/year.

Repost from last night since TMA didn’t cover it.
Syracuse got a new coach!!!
Syracuse Football
Not official yet but as all programs that have been run into the ground, there is always hope with a new coach and a new season.
Doug Marrone, coordinator for the Saints offense and former Syracuse player will likely be the new coach. I am excited to see what he can do.
Can’t be worse than Greg Robinson.
(Quote)
Sparty thanks for reminding me that they dont have Jack in the box in Florida.
(Quote)
Hmm, my sports affiliations are strictly regional. I root for all the NY area teams. I am a big Yankee fan but if the Mets are in the playoffs or if the Yanks are not on, I root for them. Football is more even, I would say 65-35 Jets over Giants. I favor the Islanders over Rangers since they are closer to me and I have attended more games. NBA I don’t really care about but I used to like watching Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin. At this point I haven’t watched an NBA game yet this year since I really don’t care.
I lived in Syracuse for 8 years and got my Masters from there so I root for them in big time college sports. However when Cornell plays Syracuse once per year, I still will root for Cornell. They actually were up at the half this year. Hopefully they win the Ivies and get another NCAA bid. Never thought I would see Cornell in the NCAAs and Syracuse out.
(Quote)
I thought spencer would be happy with #43 on the movies list….but #17 is right on the money for him too.
And Boondock Saints is an awesome movie…gotta watch that one again….along with The Professional and a lot of those movies on that list that I haven’t seen yet.

We should really have a tab page at the top that has profiles of each of our authors. Which teams we root for, which teams we hate, which sports we think we are experts in, which posts we do regularly, maybe even put in a set of predictions for the coming year that will stay up the whole time.

CC
Wang
Joba
Pettitte
Hughes
Of course Pettitte is not signed yet. If they don’t sign him then who? Kennedy, Igawa?

It has to be really really hard to recruit for Army’s team.
First, the guy has to be able to play Div IA (BCS) level football. Second, they have to get accepted to West Point. And third and most difficult, they have to WANT to go to West Point.
Also, good chance they frown on using steroids and other PEDs at Army unlike the other big powers.

Did a little more reading on the Devendorf (PG from Syracuse basketball) getting suspended.
Several teammates with him, corroborated his story at the judicial review. Apparently they agree he got into some kind of argument. The girl says he hit her. He says he didn’t and so do his teammates (naturally).
Now I am a big innocent until proven guilty guy. I have no idea what happened and don’t pretend to.
However, the judicial review board composed of unnamed students, in a closed hearing, recommended that he be suspended for the rest of the academic year.
They said the testimony from his teammates seemed contrived and rehearsed. Well OK. There were also no physical injuries or bruises to the girl’s face. That only proves he didn’t hit her hard but that at least is something.
Based on that, I say it is completely unproven and you can’t suspend any student for year based upon that.
First time ever Jim Boeheim has ever spoken out against a University suspension and he has had several players suspended.
Interesting to read the posts from other students there who had real problems with the review board as well.

isn’t most testimony rehearsed?

The hardest part about getting guys to go to Army is finding guys who could get in. And, no player with any chance of ever being an NFL prospect would ever go there because of the service commitment. That’s why I supported Army letting Caleb Campbell go pro last year and wish it would have worked out for him.
I hope that whoever Army hires (we should have hired Turner Gill 2 years ago when we could) can bring some respect back to the program. Or, at least, can bring back a win against Navy.
