Top 25 Picks

By sparty

I’m back for another trip through the Top 25 matchups.  Who knew at the start of the season that the Penn State vs Michigan State game would be a much more interesting game to watch  than Michigan and Ohio State.?  Wait, we all knew that Michigan would suck.  Is this the first week in the history of ESPN that there was zero hype entering that game? Rightfully so.  Boring. But the pic after the jump is not boring. (I guess it kinda sorta could be NSFW)

I agree ladies, I agree.

Anyway, onto the Top 25 Action for this weekend…

2. Texas Tech @ 5. Oklahoma- I just can’t take Tech on the road in Norman.   I just can’t do it.  I think that I would take the home team in this game everytime.

4. Florida vs Citadel – really, this is who the Gators are playing in November?

7. Utah vs 14. BYU – The Cougars can stop the one team from crashing to the BCS party, but they won’t.

8. Penn State vs 15 Michigan State – I love my boys, but we haven’t won in Happy Valley since 1965.  This isn’t the year that we do.

9. Boise State @ Nevada – Trap game for the Broncos.  They have Fresno State next week, so they may struggle agaist Nevada.  They still win, but ugly.

10. OSU vs Michigan – This has the makings of being one of the ugliest blowouts this series has ever seen.

16. TCU vs Air Force – Horned Frogs, what a great mascot.

18. LSU vs Ole Miss – LSU needs to right the ship, or they might find themselves playing closer to Christmas, rather than New Years.

19. Cincinnati vs 20 Pittsburgh – the Mustache has been pissing me off all year. He probably does it again.

21. Oregon State vs Arizona – the Beavers are going to be in the Rose Bowl, just weird.

22. UNC vs NC St- Tennessee faithful will have an eye on this game, why? Because Butch doesn’t really want to stay at a basketball school.

25. Maryland vs FSU – The turtles are ranked, that means they lose.

No major upsets this week.  Just not feeling that vibe.  Is this also the last week of college pick’em? If so, I need to hold onto that 10 pt margin I have on Patphish.

wait wait wait, all this talk about Sparty pulling the upset and you don’t even pick it?

But you are correct there’s too much at stake for Penn State to lose at home.

Hey, you little TV guru nuggets, I FINALLY got an HD cable box with DVR! (whoo-hoo) Anyhoo, why do the HD channels look no different from the regular?? I mean no better. My husband was grumbling about a movie he watched last night on HBO HD.  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

yeah, jen; it’s pretty noticeable on our tv. when we first got the HD stuff, I used to flip back-and-forth between the same sporting event on the regular and HD channels and be fascinated by the clarity difference. mrs. mizerle wasn’t nearly as fascinated as me…she just wanted me to pick a channel.  (Quote)

Could it be the absence of the HDMI cable? I have one, but it’s not compatible, whatever the heck that means, so I have to go back to the office anyhow for a new remote and the service guy told me to ask for an HDMI cable there.  (Quote)

The idea was mine, the photoshop was Mikey.  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

That would do it, jen. Component can only get you up to 480p (I think). HDMI will get you 1080i or 720p.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

I don’t have HD yet, but I believe you need either an HDMI cable or component cables to get the HD picture…although I still have analog cable and my TV has a digital tuner so it brings in some of the HD channels.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

Component gets me to 1080p on my Xbox…I think the only real difference is the number of cables to plug in…component has separate feeds for audio and video…hdmi has audio and video all in one cable.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

that is exactly your problem Jen. i am surprised your tv even lets you view the HD channels.  (Quote)

  • Jen says:

Yes, with the 5000 cables (red and white for audio and green red and blue for input) they come in but not any different than the standard. I noticed on the front of the box that it was giving the 480p, 720p, 1080p as I changed each channel. Stations like HGTV looked great and read at 1080, but some weren’t. I noticed on TBS, the Seinfeld rerun actually looked like crap on HD so it probably wasn’t coming in correctly.

The spouse thinks it’s all b.s. I need to prove him wrong! ha

Thanks for your tech support, boys. I will be so happy to watch OSU/UM and PSU/MSU in HD.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

A lot of the old re-runs still look kinda crappy on the HD channels because they haven’t been redone in HD…they’re just digitalized which wind up looking still kinda crappy on a big TV…check the primetime shows and sports and you should see a difference.  (Quote)

  • Jen says:

Do you guys know why my HDMI cable I got wouldn’t work?? I thought that was weird. When I turned my TV on, a message said “your TV does not support the DVI, please choose another input” ????

This is why the cable guy is supposed to do this job I guess.  (Quote)

  • Jen says:

Right Rek, since Peyton tells us that most sports are now shot on a Sony HD camera in his commercial! LOL  (Quote)

the Chicken cracks me up, mascots always make me laugh.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

Can’t help you with that problem jen…I Googled the error, but couldn’t find any direct solutions…could be an issue with your cable box or just try another cable.  (Quote)

  • HawkEye19 says:

DO you have more than one HDMI port, jen?  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

the Chicken cracks me up, mascots always make me laugh.

the hell are you talking about?

/chickens are funny…monkeys are funny too.

  • knightwhosaysni says:

He’s talking about the San Diego Chicken in the Sony commercial with Peyton Manning and Dale Whinehart Jr.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

miz- the sony commercial with Peyton and the san diego chicken.  (Quote)

  • Jen says:

HawkEye~ I do, but the connection was supposed to go into port 1 directly from the cable box.
I’m leaving now to see if those goofs in the office can help me.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

Jen, to view a high definition station, you need to make sure that first of all, your cable box is putting out a high definition signal. If a show like Seinfeld wasn’t shot in high def, it will never be high def.
As someone said, you need to use HDMI or component video cables from you box to TV. HDMI is a digital format and is much better than component video cables. Component video cables are analog and have to be resampled.

TVs suport different formats. Typically the number is how many pixels per horizontal scan line. 1080 means 1080 pixels on each line. Regular DVDs are 720. The i or p is for interlaced or progressive. Interlaced means that each update they either give you the odd or even lines. Progressive means that they give you all the lines at once for each frame.

Even on the little 32″ LCD Vizio I got for my father, the difference between HD and regular signals is very noticeable.

My cable company (Cablevision) has all their HD stations in the 700 range. If you look at CBS on channel 2 for example, it is regular definition. However 702 is the HD version and if the show is an HD show (which nearly all new prime time shows are these days) it is noticeable.

Don’t know if that helps.  (Quote)
