The Morning After: November 21, 2008

By sparty

Yawn…Some mornings I wake up and do not want to complete this post.  To be honest, I usually do some of the work in the evening.  But most of the work gets completed in the early AM.  I have to be at work by 7am, so it is required that I get it done early.  Today is one of those days that I am feeling completely unmotivated to do this.  I have about 5 sports related sites open and there is not one story I would like to start with.  Hmmmm, ah, there’s one…

The New Boss

The New Boss

George Steinbrenner will always be “the Boss”, but he no longer is the boss of the New York Yankees.   After a long 35 year run as the owner of the greatest franchise in all of professional sports, the larger than life Steinbrenner handed the keys over to his son Hal.  No, not the loud mouth Hank that you all have come to know and love hate, but the younger of the two, who is a little bit more business savvy, and has always shown more interest in the day to day operations of the ball club.  The buck will stop with the Hal, even though Hank will probably remain the mouth piece for the franchise, much like his father always was.  We can only hope that the 78 year old George will be able to enjoy his retirement, even though in recent years his health has been deteriorating.

Speaking of Yankees, did you read the great piece from yesterday regarding the Yankees, their fans and CC Sabathia?

Uh oh.  The Philadelphia Phillies title defense just became much more difficult. They are likely to begin their season without Pedro Feliz.  Oh, and Chase Utley too.

The Yankees will have competition from a likely competitor in regards to the AJ Burnett sweepstakes.  They have an ace in the hole with former teammate Josh Beckett.

I cannot believe how much talk there is each week about the 2010 Free Agent Class.  We still have 2 full years of this.

The Cowboys will be without Felix Jones for the year.  Can’t say I feel bad about that.

The Lions and their fans sure are loosers.

Michigan and Ohio State are playing one another tomorrow and nobody cares, except for Spencer.

Speaking of Michigan, things are not getting much better for the reputation of Rich Rodriguez. He has lost another player, and there might be more wanting to go out the door. Not exactly what you want to hear as an alum of a team that just suffered its first 8, and soon to be 9 loss season.

Mackey Arena has some questionable food.

MMMM, Baconator.  Charlie Weis loves them. How much you ask?  Just visit his Myspace page.

So I watched the Celtics blow out the Pistons for the 2nd time in less than a month last night and came to this conclusion, they are really good.  I see you are shocked.  One thing that really stood out for me during the entire game, is how into the game the whole Celtics team is.  When garbage time was happening in the 4th quarter, the entire Boston bench was standing up like  you see a college bench, cheering on their teammates.  These guys have not let the success of last year change them.  They are still just as hungry.

My upset picks from Happy Hour were looking really bad until Michigan upended UCLA.  I took the cmfost approach, throw enough crap at the wall, something is bound to stick.

Pittsburgh beat the Bengals 27-10, in a game that nobody watched.

I am really looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow.  I am going to need the extra rest before the Michigan State/Penn State for the Big Ten Title.
