It’s Friday, what is TWTWCFB doing here? We decided to take time out of our busy schedules in order to give you our predictions for this year’s BCS Bowl Games…Truthfully, we simply missed you.
A little pre-picks analysis in the form of an excerpt from the Book of BCS Trey-science: Chapter 172 – The way the BCS is set up:
BCS Championship Game: BCS #1 v. BCS #2
Rose: Big 10 Champ v. Pac 10
Sugar: SEC Champ (likely vacant) v. At Large
Fiesta: Big 12 Champ (likely vacant) v. At Large
Orange: ACC Champ v. At Large
The “definites”:
The Big 12 is getting 2
The SEC is getting 2
The Big East has no bowl affiliation, so one bowl picks them up
A non BCS team is going (Utah/Boise/BYU/Ball State)
This leaves 4 more conferences: The ACC, Big East, Big 10, and Pac 10 for ONE extra spot
The ACC isn’t getting it; every team has at least three losses.
The Big East won’t get it because every team not named West Virginia travels like doo doo (which does matter when your looking to sell at least 18,000 tickets to each school AND hoping for a sellout).
Which leaves us with the Pac 10 and Big 10. Your scenarios:
If Oregon State wins out (@ Arizona and Oregon) they win the PAC 10 and go to the Rose Bowl, putting USC in the Sugar or Fiesta (which ever gets 1st pick). If Oregon State loses and USC beats UCLA, then the Big 10 will get 2 in, Ohio State, Michigan State, or Penn State.
The Bowls select in order, the bowls that lose teams to the BCS title game get 1st pick. Whatever team/conference is ranked higher decides that. So…
Fiesta/Sugar: Pick 1st and 2nd, under the Big 10 gets 2 scenario, the Fiesta will take a Big 12 and Sugar will take an SEC team to replace the Big 12 and SEC teams they lost…easy, right?
Then the Fiesta picks again: They will likely take Utah/BYU/Boise St because of a deal worked out with the Sugar (who took Hawaii as a favor to Fiesta last year), but the 2nd Big 10 or a Big East team could be here.
Then the Sugar picks: Big 10 OR NonBCS at large BYU/Utah/Boise St OR Big East. I’d say it will likely be Big 10 because they took the knife for the Fiesta by taking Hawaii. These schools travel well too.
Then the Orange is forced to take a Big East team, which does not travel well at all. Who knows, if WVU wins the BE they might be in the Sugar, but a lot needs to happen there.
Se Comprende?
Our BCS projections are gonna be in Overrated/Underrated style. This is not whether the games are overrated/underrated, but rather, who we got. Onward ho:
The Rose Bowl: 4:15 PM - 1/1/2009
Trey: Penn State v. USC- A decent game. However, at some point the Rose Bowl needs to get over the whole Pac 10 v. Big 10 game. It’s not as traditional as they make it out to be, and could you imagine the hype for a Texas Tech v. USC or Florida v. USC game? Stupid tradition.
Miz: Penn State v. USC- The strongest team from the weakest BCS conference versus the strongest team from the third-weakest BCS conference…titillating to say the least. I agree with Trey; “The Granddaddy of Them All” is losing appeal with sticking to it’s conference affiliation guns. Get a Florida, Texas Tech, Texas, or Bammer in there against USC and that’ll pump some excitement into the event.
The Orange Bowl: 8:00 PM – 1/1/2009
Trey: Cincinnati v. North Carolina – The 4 people in the United States that will watch this game will be excited.
Miz: Cincy v. Georgia Tech - Trey’s got it going on today, cause I’m in agreement again with how excited the college football landscape will not be for this matchup. If his matchup occurred, I would be one of those four interested since it would pit two of the rumored top three coaches on the wishlist for the Temmessee (Trey Note: And you give me crap about the Treo?) job against each other. But, UNC is not getting in this game because they won’t even play for their conference championship. The Big East should not have a BCS automatic bid; but they do and Cincinnati will earn it. Second, it’ll be the Rambling Wreck representing the ACC and I have nothing to say about them. (Trey Note: This is why I proposed the MWC v. Big East game on the last weekend to determine an an auto spot in the BCS. If there is another Big East team that deserves being picked, they can still be under the BCS umbrella for at large teams)
The Sugar Bowl: 8:00 PM 1/2/2009
Trey: Florida v. Ohio State- Think Tressel wouldn’t want this game? Think he’ll win it? Silly people…no.
Miz: Bammer v. Ohio State- The prediction above this one is an excellent example of reverse psychology. Trey thinks that if he picks against Florida, they’ll have a better shot at winning out, thus getting into the national title game. I’m not falling for it. Now, about this matchup…the Buckstaches will have an excellent opportunity to beat an SEC team, but Bammer will bring the Houndstooth Twins with them to Naw’lins to show the Sweatervests how the ladies of the south don’t walk around all winter in hoodies. O-H…I-0 for 10 against the SEC!
The Fiesta Bowl: 8:00 PM 1/3/2009
Trey: Utah v. Texas Tech - Sorry Oklahoma, but Phoenix is sick of your company, and that will cost ya a BCS Bowl. Enjoy Dallas. As for Utah, a loss to BYU could put Boise State here, or Ball State if both falter.
Miz: BYU v. Texas – The Mormons Cougars get in this game because they will beat Utah this weekend while Texas gets in this game because they will watch Oklahoma lose to Texas Tech this weekend.
The BCS National Championship: 8:00 PM 1/8/2009
Trey: Alabama v. Texas- (A gasp hits the room) Yes, Bama finds ways to win, it’s the 2002 Buckeyes all over again. Whereas Texas will be your Big 12 Champs. In short, Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, Texas gets in on the three way tie.
Miz: Florida v. Texas Tech- Florida will smoke Bammer in the SEC championship game and place themselves in the national title game. I’m predicting Texas Tech beats Oklahoma this weekend. Now the tricky part is trying to predict how the BCS will react with a one loss teams in USC, Penn State, Texas, and Florida sitting out there. They won’t put Texas in because they already lost to Texas Tech and couldn’t be the Big 12 champ in this scenario. USC’s not getting in because they arguably have had conferece competition as weak as if they played in the Big East. And, Penn State won’t get a shot because of Ohio State’s previous two follies as a Big 10 representative in the title game. So, I’m going with Florida to rightfully get the nod.
BONUS MATERIAL! We have a hypothetical-sparty-question from a weekly listener:
Radio Guy: We have a nervous caller on the line for the AutoZone wacky-local-radio-call-in segment. Go ahead, listener…
Listener: Hey guys. First time listener; long time caller; so thanks for taking my call. Listen, I’m a bi-
Radio Guy: Wait a sec…we need you to turn your radio down.
Listener: Oh…sorry. Anyway, I’m a big fan of Michigan State…go Spartans; woo hoo!. Sorry…anyway, just for grins and giggles, let’s say the Sparty’s beat the Knitting Lions this weekend. Would Ohio State definitely go to the Rose Bowl or are there any other scenarios were O$U would go to a different BCS bowl game and MSU would get the invite to “The Gradpappy?” I’ll hang up and listen to your comments. And muck fichigan!
Radio Guy: Good question, wacky-local-radio-call-in-guy who’s question is sponsored by AutoZone…Get in the Zone, AutoZone. According to the Book of BCS Trey-science: Chapter 83 – Big Televen Asinineness:
Ohio State would get the Rosy nod with a win over Michigan and Penn State loss to MSU this weekend. By conference record, MSU and OSU would be tied for the Big 10 championship. So, according to Big 10 bylaws…
“2. If there is a tie for the championship, the winner of the game between these two teams shall represent the conference.”
…which would be Ohio State in this case. That does not mean that Michigan State won’t be in a BCS Bowl because it’s likely two Big 10 teams go. If Sparty knocks off PSU tomorrow, OSU goes to Pasadena, and the BCS Bowls get to choose between Sparty and the Knitting Lions; and at that point, it will come down to what bowl wants who. Both travel well and both get TV ratings.
There you have it, folks. Our picks are in and now we get to wait and see what happens. Luckily for us, there are four head-to-head matchups that will confirm/blow up our Nostradamus-ian efforts above: PSU v. MSU, Texas Tech v. Oklahoma, and BYU v. Utah are all this weekend while Alabama v. Florida will be the SEC championship game in three weekends. The comments section below has been reserved for telling us how stoopid we are your praise of our efforts. (Trey Note: How can Miz forget the Citadel v. Florida game?)
