The Weekend That Was College Football: 10/20

By GatorTrey

Nothing better than close football games, and I’m talking those nail biting games that you have no real vested interest in the outcome, but for some reason find yourself on the edge of the seat and overreacting to every play type games. Too bad that was few an far between this weekend…That’s right 14 of the 19 games featuring top 25 teams were massive blowouts. Sure any Saturday that you get to sit around the couch and do nothing but watch football all day is great, but you’d like a little more action than watching Penn State run the score up on a feeble Michigan team.My usual partner, Miz, is off on vacation/Davy Crocketting in Tin-Uh-Sea and is unable to join TWTW this week. While his zany antics and biased comments can’t be replaced, we have a very special guest substituting. He is a well respected college football expert who has spent countless hours examining the games in order to give you the best information they possibly can. Say Hi Sparty.  “Yawn…Hi.  Man, monday already?  Not too much talking about you know what?

Who told me Missouri was a National Title contender? Seriously? Texas is a great team. In fact they’re probably better than they were in ‘05, but there is nothing about that Missouri defense to even make me believe they’re a top 15 team. After that massive trouncing at the hands of Texas, Missouri still stands as the favorite to win the Big 12 JV division and will get their rematch in December.

Throw your claws in the air, and wave them like you just don’t care…Despite having a stud WR in the crustacean sensation, Michael Crabtree, the team that no one is talking about in the Big 12 is Texas Tech. And while they’ve been largely untested, we’re about to find out if they’re real or if they’re just a 12 year old playing Madden on easy. Their next four games are @Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma State, and @ Oklahoma.  In the end, they could be playing a HUGE role in this year’s national championship run.

Not that this site cares…Ohio State looked good Saturday, but they still aren’t great. Michigan State did everything they could to give Ohio State that convincing of a win. Anyone scared yet that they MIGHT be in Miami January 8th?

Sparty: Geez Trey, that was mighty nice of you. But they kicked our ass.

It’s free for the taking, someone HAS to step up…Can someone in the ACC please play consistently for one week? Their three ranked teams, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and North Carolina all lost, and here comes Georgia Tech with that son of a bitch, how do you stop it Triple Option, and Florida State who somehow has found the ugliest way to win football games.

Overrated/Underrated:It’s this time again. If you haven’t gotten the idea by now, print this blog out, tape it to your wall, lower your head and run into it as fast as you can. With the BCS rankings coming out we’re gonna hit up the top 10.

Texas -
Trey: Underrated, yes they’re number 1, but if there was ever a #1 that was underrated, it’s here.
Sparty: Just right.  They are not only at top of the polls, but they are #1 in the BCS.  The only complaints I hear about them, is that they may struggle to hold the top spot because of the difficulty of their schedule.  Going undefeated in any sport is difficult.

Alabama -
Trey: Overrated (for now). Saban has worked wonders at Bama, but this team is too inconsistent against mediocre talent. SEC mediocre that is, which is the top of the ACC.
Sparty: Hmmm. I would say right where they should be.  So Georgia is mediocre huh? Wait, they are on this list, aren’t they?  I like this team, a lot. That is hard for me to say, because  I hate Saban with a deep passion.

Penn State -
Trey: Solid team, about right. I’d love to see Joe Pa to get one last shot at a title, but I still kinda think that if you put this team up against Texas, USC, or Alabama, they’d lose.
Sparty: Underrated. Once again, a dominant Joe Pa team is going to get screwed over.  Sure they struggled out of the gates against Michigan, but they dominated from the middle of the 2nd quarter until the end. You could make the argument that they were actually looking ahead to Ohio State.   Wow, looking past Michigan.  That’s crazy.

Oklahoma -
Trey: Don’t look so bad now, do they? Underrated
Sparty: Who said they looked bad?  They just don’t look as good as Texas.  Defense is still horrible. Overrated.

USC -
Trey: Trey they LOST to Oregon State!!!  I know, but they might still be the second best team in the country. Underrated.
Sparty: Trey the LOST to Oregone State!!! Seriously, they lost to Oregon State.  That is a bad loss. They play in the horrible Pac 10.  But they are still very talented.  Just right.

Oklahoma State-
Trey: Fun team, lots of talent. Funions! Not a top 10 team, and we’ll see that this week @ Texas. Overrated.
Sparty: I say they are right where they should be.  If Texas blows them out, that may be more of an indication of how great Texas is more than anything.  I like this team a lot. Just right.

Georgia -
Trey: When are these guys going to dominate like we were sold in August? Overrated.
Sparty: I keep hearing from Georgia fans that they would turn it on in October.  Well, we are almost to the 11th month and they still are playing poorly, even in their wins.  Waaaaay overrated.

Texas Tech -
Trey: I really really think this team is underrated, and they’re going to ruin the Big 12 season for Texas or Oklahoma.
Sparty: Which tells me you have watched none of their games. They have no defense.  Zero.  They are going to get murdered by Texas and Oklahoma.  Please.  But the Crabapple Tree is fun to watch. Overrated.

Ohio State-
Trey: I want to say overrated really badly, but if they beat Penn State Saturday, they’ll be underrated. This team just finds ways to win.
Sparty: They are the greatest team in all the land.  This is a different team that lost to USC earlier in the year. Terrelle Pryor adds a dimension that is very difficult to stop.  Beanie Wells is the top back in the country, without a doubt.  I know this stuff very well.  They are underrated.

Florida -
Trey: UNDERRATED these guys should be #1. Wait they lost to Ole Miss? I musta shoved that one out of my mind. I’d say at 10 underrated. They’re a better team than Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and Georgia.
Sparty: They slightly underrated.  I think Teblow is on a mission right now.  But they are not better than the OSUs.

Who’s Haught:

- Miz – Tennessee finally wins and he’s not here to celebrate! Unfortunately Miz needed a day game at Tennessee in order to attend the “3rd Saturday in October,” CBS elected for Jawja/El-ES-EWE.

- Texas – Duuuuuuh. Colt McCoy has had 10 incompletions in the last two games. 10 incompletions!

- Northwestern – The ‘Cats are hot, damn hot. They didn’t just beat Purdue, they smoked them. Yes there was a little trip up against a certain team based in East Lansing, Michigan, but we’re talkin’ ’bout Northwestern, not Ohio State here.

- Ohio State – Do I really have to give more reasons?  Stay tuned. Friday I will have a long post about the greatness of one imparticular player.

Who’s Naught:

- Washington State – So this is what it has come to. You’re so awful that tyou’ve given up 60 to FOUR teams this year. Not even Duke or Syracuse have been able to do that during recent slides. You’re what most single men refer to as a “slump buster” Used, abused, and left for not after one night of rocking your world.

- Wisconsin – Are your SERIOUS. Four weeks ago you were talking about winning the Big 10. Now you’re talking about just making a bowl game. Sure you’re the program that always is good for at least one bad loss a year, but Iowa has been terrible, and the way Michigan looks, you might have just lost to North Dakota State. Something needs fixin in Madison.

- Michigan State- BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  But, if they beat Michigan and this will be a succesful year.

Trey’s WAY WAY too early BCS Bowl Projections:

Orange: Boston College v. WVU
Sugar: Florida v. Penn State
Rose: Ohio State v. Oklahoma
Fiesta: Boise State v. Alabama
BCS Championship: Texas v. USC

Sparty’s more accurate way way too early BCS projections:

Orange: Florida State v Pitt
Sugar: Florida v. Utah (Urban Bowl!)
Rose: Ohio State v. USC
Fiesta: Oklahoma St v. Alabama
BCS Championship: Texas v. Penn State
