NFL Franchise Players

The Greatest Giant Ever

The Greatest Giant Ever

The past couple days the same link has been posted in separate articles.  The link I am speaking of is this one. It leads you to the results of a SportsNation poll over at the 4 letter.

After looking through the list of greatest players for each franchise as voted on by the fans, it was tough to argue with any of them.  There were only a couple that grabbed our attention.

The most comical of them all was Matt Stover for the Ravens.  The kicker?!?  I understand that the Ravens history does not go back too far (1996) because they had to relinquish all historical records back to the Cleveland Browns following their move to Baltimore.  However, when Ray Lewis, the leader of one of the most dominant defensive units (2000 Ravens) is not considered the face or greatest of the franchise, that is just ridiculous.   Are the fans of Baltimore that ignorant?  Granted, Lewis may be overrated as a LB in the entire NFL, but it was his leadership and ferociousness that led that team to the Super Bowl Championship in 2000.  Plus, Matt Stover is a kicker!!!  Seriously, why didn’t Pat fans just vote Adam Vinatieri as the greatest Patriot ever?  Oh yeah, cause he is just a friggin kicker!

Hello, Cowboy fans? Emmitt Smith???  You can tell that a younger demographic was voting on this poll. Roger Staubach is the greatest Cowboy of all time.  I will give you that Emmitt Smith is the all time leading rusher(clap clap), and I continue to stick by my stance that cmfost could have run behind that OLine and racked up 10,000 yards rushing.  The Dallas teams of the 90s rank right up there in terms off all-time great dynasties in sports, but Roger Staubach helped make Dallas America’s Team.  When one looks at Staubach’s career stats (153 TDs-109 Ints, 22,700 Yards Passing, QB Rating of 83.4) nothing really jumps out at you.  However, remember that Roger was fulfilling military duty in what would have been his first 5 seasons in the league.  He was away from the game for 5 years between his career ending at the Naval Academy and his first start with the Cowgirls Cowboys.  Remember also that the NFL was not pass happy back in the 70s. He also wasn’t too shabby the scrambler himself (2264 yards rushing, 20 rushing TDs).  Dallas not only won 2 Super Bowls under Staubach, but also won more games than anyone else in football during the 70s.  Isn’t that what sport is really about, wins and championships?  Personally, I still think Jay Novacek was the best player on the 90s Cowboys anyway.

The other one that grabbed my attention was the Arizona Cardinals.  The only reason is that they are the only franchise that needed to use a black and white photo for the greatest member of their franchise, Dick “Night Train” Lane.  Come on, OJ Anderson baby!

The toughest one to call in my book would have been which QB to choose for the Colts.  Peyton grabbed the top spot over Johnny Unitas.  Had this poll been taken two years ago, Johnny U definitely would have won this by a landslide.

Hey Marino, you won something! Just not a Super Bowl….

Seems to be a mistake on the Vikings. When one checks the actual voting from SN, Randy Moss was the winner by 2.8% over Fran Tarkenton.  The team-by-team result page lists Fran.  When I think of great Vikings, the first I always think of is Tarkenton.

Not surprisingly, Lawrence Taylor (Giants), Jim Brown (Browns), John Elway(Broncos), Brett Favre (Packers) all won by huge margins with their organizations.  However nobody dominated the competition for his team Like Barry Sanders.  Poor Barry.

Didn’t study it all that closely, but it looks like Reggie White(winner for the Eagles) ended up getting votes on two teams(Packers were the other)

What do you guys think?  Disagree with the fan base of your team?  Or anyone elses?  Would love to hear what you have to think…

jonathan ogden was the greatest lineman in the NFL for the last decade…and he gets 4.4% of the votes?

lewis wasn’t overrated in 2000-2002 when he was a force unlike anything since butkus…watching him in person was one of the most insane things ive ever seen in my life…my family has season tix 5 rows back on the dawg pound goalline and you can hear him yelling his assignments and watching him move sideline-to-sideline…it was just incredible.

    but matt fucking stover?

totally agree with you on emmitt smith…he was always overrated. probably top 10 all time, but definitely not above walter, jim brown, barry, LdT (yes, i put him in the top 5) and gale sayers.

and i’m surprised jim brown didn’t get 100% of the browns vote.  (Quote)

  • spencer096 says:

oh…and great vikings? what about jim marshall?

sure, he’s known as the dude who ran a fumble back the wrong way, but he was hte most dominant d-lineman of his era and doesn’t he still hold the record for most consecutive games played? purple people eaters man…give him some respect.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

agree with you on Marshall. but Tark is who just always pops out at me. maybe because he was a Giant too.

retarded that people voted for anyone but Brown.  (Quote)

  • john says:

Most teams should have had only one or two choices to begin with. That would have prevented all these knuckleheads from voting for the guys that had no business even being options.  (Quote)

“retarded that people voted for anyone but Brown.”

eh…i can see an argument for otto graham and bill willis.

and i was surprised bernie kosar wasn’t on the list…he’d definitely get some votes just because he could get away with murder in cleveland. hell, nobody cares that he calls into radio stations and shows up at browns functions drunker than a fish.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

spencer-, but Jim Brown is the greatest football player EVAR.  (Quote)

    Spencer,

As a Browns fan, Otto Graham was one of the greatest QB’s of all time. He lead the Browns to 9 straight Championship games (AFL and NFL). However, he gets no love because he did not play in the Super Bowl era.

Totally agree with Jim Brown though as he still has a role with the team. One could make an argument for Graham.

To bad they did not let fans vote for Franchise person. Do Pats for Belichek or Brady, Packers with Lombardi or Favre. that would have been interesting  (Quote)

    Sorry to go off topic.

ESPN PLEASE DON’T PUT THE RESULTS OF THE OLYMPICS ON YOUR MAIN PAGE. SOME OF US LIKE TO WATCH THE SUSPENSE EVEN IF IT’S TAPE DELAYED! Would entertainment weekly put the results of Dark Knight or the 6th Sense on their website? I know you want to be first to report, but fricken report it under a SPOLIERS section. (end rant)

    Franchise players.

Dolphins, it’s gotta be Marino. I know he never won a championship, and he was questionable as a team mate, but no one meant more to their franchise than Marino did for all those years.  (Quote)

  • natsfan74 says:

I hate that ESPN is spoiling everything. I think it’s an ABC/ NBC rivalry… why watch the tape delay when you can find out what happens instantly here? That’s why I am using yahoo sports right now….

Good comparison to EW — strangely appropriate as the wwl is now in the entertainment business itself, making the news instead of just reporting. Unfortunately, they are the wwl, so that’s not gonna change.  (Quote)

trey, natsfan… The Big Lead is tackling that topic as we type.  (Quote)

  • The Mark Show says:

If it were Franchise Person it would have to be Lombardi for the Packers. As far as the Pats go, I would think it would still be Brady, but it’s definitely arguable.  (Quote)

  • john says:

I think everyone is posting the results as they happen, with the exception of maybe Yahoo. Hell, for a short time CNN.com had Bolt’s 200m as breaking news this morning and made it the main headline.  (Quote)

  • john says:

I’d go with Brady over Belichick and Montana/Rice over Walsh, but I’d go with Lombardi over Favre and Knoll over Bradshaw.  (Quote)

@john-the Rooneys for the Steelers if that was the case.

as it would be the Mara’s for the Giants.  (Quote)

I thought it was odd that the Eagles player was Reggie White. I know that he played there and was a star, but I remember him more for his play for the Packers and then the Panthers.

Ray Lewis not being the face is a joke.  (Quote)

that’d be one butt-ass ugly franchise face then.

    /fuck the steelers.  (Quote)

  • August West says:

I can’t stand Ray Lewis, but having watched him play multiple time a year, he’s wasn’t over ratted one iota in his prime (which is a little past, though he’s still a force).  (Quote)
